Adventures In Eating; What Are You Brave Enough To Eat? Or Are You Chicken?

My Adventures In Eating

There are many things in life I will not try. Bungie jumping, jumping out of a perfectly safe airplane, wrestling an alligator, are only a few of those. But, there is one area of my life that I have been a littler braver in. That is what I will eat. I was raised by a hunting father. He taught me to kill only what I will eat. So, what we killed, we ate. Growing up in a hunting and fishing community, I've had plenty of opportunities to eat a variety of things. Yes, I do eat normal things like chicken, beef, seafood and yes some bologna. (which I'm not totally sure what is in that, but it's good fried with a biscuit and chocolate gravy for breakfast. Or a bologna burger is also good, as Elliott Sadler can testify to.) Some of the things that I like to eat that are not the run-of-the-mill foods that you can't order at your local drive thru are: Goat; goat meat makes great bbq. We have a small store near my house that serves it. Big seller. Muledeer, this is meat you have to travel to kill. Most that I have eat has come from out West. It's good as roast, bbq, sandwiches as well as other things. Moose, yep, you guessed it, I've had moose burgers, and they are tasty. They do not have a lot of fat. Another meat that has to travel to get back to my house. Snake, you can get that here. It's ok for me, it's not a favorite of mine, but I do like it ok. Alligator, I like this meat, when cooked right, it's tender and you can cut it with your fork. Frogs, yes, I frog gig. This you can get in your back yard down here where I live. We have a 4 1/2 acre lake so I don't have to look far for this. The legs are great fried. Eat them like a chicken leg. Coon, this is not road kill, it must be killed and eaten fresh for me to eat it. It's a dark meat and it's good in stews or chili. Beaver, don't laugh. Here they tend to build their dams and water backs up into our fields and hinders our crops. Well, if you're going to kill it, why not eat it? It's good in stews also, a tad greasy. The stew tends to make the meat not quite as oily, to me. Wild Hogs, this meat is great. I love it. Roast, sausage, bbq, whatever you'd use pork for, it applies here. But, it, of course has a wild taste. And that, to me, is a huge positive. We have those here too. The last one we ate was around 300 pounds field-dressed. Had a big cook out with it. It was great. Sheep, this meat is probably common to a lot of you, so I guess I don't have to go into a lot detail about it. It's good in a soft shell sandwich. Turtles, this is actually several kinds of meat. 7 kinds. So, you can make many things out of it, but the easiest is stew in my book. Squirrel, I'm sure that many of you eat this, but the reason I mentioned this is because my husband likes to eat the brains scrambled up with eggs and fried. I don't go there. I don't eat any type of brains from any animal. Wild Turkey and Pheasant, use these just like a turkey. Great smoked. I've eat chocolate covered insects and found out they are pretty good, actually. Not gross. Bear, I liked this meat. Roast made of this is great. Cook it in a Crockpot and it gets so tender. I guess I don't have to say that we keep deer in the freezer. Deer meat can be used for anything, deer burgers, deer helper, deer bbq, deer roast, etc. It's a lean meat and pretty much no fat. All of these meats I have mentioned are steroid and preservative-free. That's a plus when you look at all of those things they put in our foods now. Much safer to eat this kind of meat than those you buy at the store. There are still many things I haven't gotten to try yet, but I want to. So, what have you eat? What are your recipes for it? Or are you chicken?

In our home state, frog legs are on the menu of many restaurants. In the southern part of the state, there is an annual Snake Hunt, where snakes are fried and offered as chicken. Give me chicken, any day. LOL

Snake is a nice white meat, but it's a bit rubbery to me, and I'm not stickin' a frog leg in my mouth. eeeek!

I know many cultures eat bugs, insects, even roaches, and think we are really missing something. I won't say "never" but "almost never" unless I'm starving and then please pass the chocolate.

=)) good hub, but a little buggy. LOL

I'm asian so frog legs are no big deal. It tastes like chicken so it's just like eating small chicken wings.

Among the more exotic stuff that I've eaten include liver, kidney and bone marrow. They are not too bad actually. Bone marrow actually tastes like butter.

But I'm very conservative when compared to my countrymen. They will eat things like pig's brains, intestines and fish's eyeballs! Yucks!

wandererh, Thank you so much for reading my hub. I agree with you about the frog legs. Good stuff! I've heard about eating bone marrow, but haven't got to try it yet. Thanks for letting me know what to look forward to. I've actually had intestines, and I didn't care so much for them. I've not tried eyeballs yet. That might take some courage for me LOL. I've fished with fish eyeballs though and they are great bait. I really appreciate your comments on my hubs! :)

I've tried intestines. They are rather rubbery but not that bad. But eye balls and brains? No way!

You are one brave lady to even think of trying eyeballs. :)

If I ever get the chance to, I will. I just want to know what they taste like. But, I have to find someone who knows how to prepare them. Brains, ummm, I don't think I'm THAT brave LOLOL! I've heard monkey brains are good though.

wandererh  says:

Well, you have all those brain cells dying all the time. So you eat brains to replace those cells. At least I think that's the logic.

Anyway, I'll just take my vitamin supplements, thank you very much. :)

Ha Ha LOL I tried snake once..was tough cuz you are supposed to marinate it in sugar water first..was so funny though we were BBQ"g and put it on with a steak, put the cover on and when we removed the cover the snake was in a 'strike' position..we just howled...anyway since then it has become "snake & steak" for dinner anyone?...G-Ma :o) hugs

I had some deer meat chili last weekend, delicious! A friend owns a buffalo ranch so I have that fairly often. I didn't care for the frogs legs though, but I had them when I was pretty young. The rest of your menu sounds pretty darn good to me. i would try any of it except for the squirrel brains.

Very fun hub!

Hey Christoph, I wondered when you'd find your way in here, lol. Deer chili rocks! We have a place down here where we can buy our buffalo meat. Nice when you can't just run somewhere and kill one. I don't do the brains thing, that's for hubby. I appreciate you taking your time to read my hub and comment. Come back anytime! :)

It was my pleasure! I thought after I commented that I have a recipe for a bear steak, but I have never had a bear steak to try it on. So I use a rib eye instead. There are places online where folks can order many types of exotic meats, which I found researching cow brains because apparantly I live in an area where cow brain sandwiches were very popular. One place I went to alot served them though I never indulged. The government outlawed them at the outset of mad cow. Some people still make them with pig brains, but affecionadoes say they just aren't the same, and cooks say they are much more difficult to clean and cook.

Thanks!

Wow, I've never heard of that. I'd like to try that sandwich. If I'm ever where they are served, you can bet I'll be ordering one. The pig brains, ummm, well, when butchering a hog, it's a big ole mess. So, I can understand why they feel that way. Boiling the hair off, stuff like that. To me, it's just a nasty job. Doesn't smell so great either. Don't you think? Thanks so much!! :)

Snails and Squid are pretty good also. Groundhog is good if baked. I love venision, squirrel, rabbit, etc. . . The best delicacy is Jackalope stew. You should try it sometime. There is a hunter who has a recipe on hubpages somewhere. I found the link.

Well where do I begin. I love Venison if cooked well so it is tender,  I won't eat Frogs legs as I can't help thinking I would count the number of legs on the plate and be calculating how many frogs had died for my meal, I completely refuse to eat any kind of offal, and therefore Squirrel Brain is totally off the menu and Pole Cat is a kind of large wild ferret here in the UK where we don't have Skunks, so I guess I would have to pass on that too.

There used to be a restaurant in Sevenoaks in Kent in the UK, that always had the weirdest stuff on the menu such as Ostrich Steaks, Buffalo Steaks, Alligator etc, but I was never adventurous enough to try the really bizarre stuff such as the above.

Monkey anything is out for me, as it seems virtually cannibalistic.

I think different parts of the world think things are normal and others think they are strange. I think there are just a few things that cross all borders, chicken maybe? Yes, venison is great. I try to keep it in my freezer. It's very versitle. Thank you for taking time to read my hub and comment. I appreciate it.

Mighty Hunter, Welcome! Nice to meet you! That sounds mighty good. I have to admit, that's one I haven't tried, but I'm always up for a challenge. Does it take THAT big a gun to kill it? Would a plain old shotgun kill it too? Cause I don't have anything near as big as what's in your picture. I may be undergunned. Hmm.......I need to look on the net and see if I can find a better caliber of gun for me, looks like. I have to admit, my Kimber .45 is my favorite thing in the world to shoot. But, you can't hunt for food with that. :( If this bailout thing goes bad, we may all be out hunting Jackalope! Thank you for taking your time to read my hub and for your comment. It was great!

It takes areally big gun to bring down a Jackalope. They're the toughest meanest and nastiest creatures there are to kill. -- Jelly fish

But I'd try almost anything - I don't fear what i don't understand. On my list - frogs legs, snake, alligator, and snails.

rachelc, Thank you for taking your time to read my post. I'm sorry I left that out of the hub. For years I hunted quail with my Daddy. We'd be in the field before sunrise. I loved it. But, it wasn't so fond of the taste. It was ok, but I perfer wild turkey to it. I like the taste more and there's more meat on them. But, hunting quail or dove is more fun to me. Hmm......how can I hunt like I'm hunting quail and dove and end up with as much meat as a turkey? LOL Thanks for reminding me about them. Sorry I left that out. Have you ever been sprayed by another hunter? I have to admit I have. But, it wasn't bad, bird shot. Glad we weren't hunting deer! LOL

My grandfather liked to eat squirrel brains and eggs, too. Eating snake always reminds me of a poem by Ogden Nash:

A gourmet challenged me to eat

A tiny bit of rattlesnake meat

Remarking, "Don't look horror-stricken,

You'll find it tastes like chicken."

And it did.

Now chicken I cannot eat;

Because it tastes like rattlesnake meat.

I also enjoyed clicking on your ads - hope your income just went up. Personally, I enjoy deep-fried crappie roe.
