How do I know which one to pick?

Please note: ads placed on this hub are by no means a recommendation of mine as a legitmate program and are not placed here by me. Also I want to add that some who read this have asked for answers, information or help, but if you do not leave a way to contact you, I can't get back to you..... I do not hide from anyone. If you want to reach me, my email address is complus1@yahoo.com I am also on IM at complus1. I will post this at the end of this blog also.....

However, with that said, I started looking into this several years ago. I can't tell you the number of scams I got into without realizing it at the time. Not everything you come across is going to be a scam, but there are other factors that may be built in which will keep you from reaching financial success.

1. Surveys, lotto, surf for pay, typing at home, or other FREE stuff to make money, here is what happens: you end up spending countless hours wasting valuable time and making pennies on the dollar, if anything at all. Now if you only want to make anywhere from $10.00 to a couple of hundred a month or if being entered into a prize pool is enough, go for it. More than likely you will make nothing even though everyone who advertises these things will swear you will make LOTS OF MONEY. Lots of money is a relative term; for some it is $100 extra a month, for others it may be in the thousands.

2. Before signing up, do some due diligence... there are all sorts of sites that report on scams. One is MLMwatchdog.com another is Ripoffreport.com. Investigate the company, investigate the owners. Go to Google and do a search. example using XYZ as the company name: XYZ [scam]. Read through articles you find. Scammers are getting smarter and actually put the word 'scam' in their article and may actually be advertisement for the 'opp'. Others may lead you to information you REALLY need to know. Whois.net is a great place to identify the people behind the web site, then google them. Play like a detective if you are not sure. Yes, it's work, but isn't your money and peace of mind worth a little?

Look at the website. Is there contact information located somewhere besides an email fill in form, a phone number? Is there a location of the business? DO you have to pay for information about the company? Can you tell from the main page what the opp is or do you have to submit a form for someone to contact you first? If you can't find this information on the site, then how can you contact them when there is a problem later? Email? People delete unwanted email all the time.

If you register for the newsletters from mlmwatchdog.com you will get reports on problems within companies, sometimes long before the people promoting those companies ever find out about it.

3. Reconsider signing up for anything unless you can actually talk to the person wanting you to join their "opp". Working from home is NOT a 'just you' proposition... We can't do it alone... not and make the money a month like a lot of these ads claim. It just won't happen. I promise you that from experience. Ask what kind of training you will receive, if you don't get a comfortable feeling answer, then I doubt you are going to feel comfortable after you sign on either. If you sign on and don't get good guidance and regular mentoring, you are going to end up being on your own.

4. Read the compensation plan and the Policies and Procedures before joining. If you can't get access to those two documents without signing up, DON'T do it. Many policies and procedures have statements in them such as "we have the right to terminate you for any cause". I know several people who were in what they thought were great companies and when they started making the big money, the company cancelled them, taking their people and commissions. IT HAPPENS every day.

NOTE: Most Policies and Procedures are written to protect the company NOT you. The longer the document is, the more I would worry. Also be aware that some companies do not allow their reps to advertise on the internet. If that was in your plan and you don't find out until after you join, then what?

5. Beware of compensation plans that change. I have only heard of a couple of companies that changed the comp plan to benefit the marketers, in most cases the changes benefit the company. Also

6. Forget what YOU asre passionate about. Find out what other people are passionate about... whether it be health/wellness, travel, insurance, legal things, beauty.... you will have an easier time promoting something that others are passionate about than something that just you are passionate about.

7. Be prepared to learn the skills you need whether it is while you are starting or before you get started. Maybe you're not a doctor, but if you are, I hope you got skills before you started practicing. However, the beauty of network marketing is that you can learn skills as you go along, AS long as there is good training and mentoring.

I was in one opp, a Pre-Launch, and kept asking my upline, (when I could reach him) when was there going to be some training information posted because there was a link on the site for training but nothing there. Six months later, still no training info and I was not able to reach him anymore either. NOT a good sign. I don't know whether he had jumped ship to go to another pre launch or just got tired of hearing from me.

Find a mentor. I will be glad to help you, regardless of what business you want to start. AND if you have already gotten started but things just don't seem to be working out, give me a shout.

8. "Pre-launch" opportunities. Being the new kid on the block is not always the best thing. Many of these companies fail in the first two years.

9. Joining a company who is listed on the stock exchanges does not give you any extra advantages over one that isn't. Those companies have shareholders who are taking a portion of your commissions. Shareholders expect returns on their investments and will not hesitate to vote your compensation out in lieu of more returns for them.

Also, some companies have been around so long that the market is already saturated with reps. If you are thinking about getting into a company who has been around, let's say 15+ years, do something I didn't do before you join. Ask people you know or meet "Hey, I heard about this company, have you ever heard of them?" After I joined, then I asked and most responses were either, ‘yes, but I wouldn't buy from them" or "yes, I know so-n-so who sells that stuff." Very rarely did I run across someone who had not heard of the company. Point being, you may have a great product or service, but may not be able to get customers like they claim.

10. If you have to give up your first one or two sign-ons to the person above you, watch out. These are called Aussie one-ups and two-ups. Many of them are not legal or are just borderline. Also consider this, the statistics say that the ‘average' person will only be able to recruit 2.6 people in their business without a duplicate able system for success. Now if you don't have that duplicateable system and have to give up one or two of your sign ups before you make any commissions. Hmmmmmmm......

I got into one of these. The guy recruiting me even gave me my first person, who I in turn paid $25 for my first person to join and passed him up to my upline. My upline made his $25 off a dead lead and I never found anyone else. I am glad I didn't, because the site got shut down a week later. I was lucky, I had only invested $25.00. The opp did not have a product, which leads me to my next point.

11. If the company doesn't not have a product or service, or you pay only through pay-pal or some other type of cash exchange service, or mailing CASH (of all things). BEWARE! As soon as the FTC finds out about them and you, somebody is going to jail, and it might just be you, the innocent victim.

Any program where you collect the payment and then send the company a portion of through pay-pal or services like that, BEWARE! More than likely the company is hiding their profits through paypal and if your customer is not satisfied, files a dispute, don't think whoever you sent part of your earnings to is going to give their share back... and this is illegal BIG TIME.

12. If it costs more than $500 to start, BEWARE. There are laws in most countries that limit the amount one should have to pay to start their home based business.

13. Recently I have seen some sites offering an MLM opportunity while helping the underprivileged at the same time. Let me ask you something, how humanitarian is to make money off others by playing on someone's sympathies and compassion for others? Who is really making all that money? More than likely it's the guy at the top who had the brilliant idea. Some of these opps are also strictly a ‘gifting' program which is also illegal in some countries.

Also when did it become acceptable to use GOD or some other religious entity as sales leverage? I personally think a person who has to claim their program is "God" driven would be better to show that in action, not as sales hype.

14. Buying Leads: Many opps will tell you that you have to buy leads. Some of them even work with specific companies who sell these things. Almost every opp I was in either promised to give leads or wanted me to buy them.

Here are how most leads work. People make money by gathering other's email addresses and then selling them. Someone signs up for information about ‘something', maybe even not a biz opp. Their information gets captured and put on a list. That list gets sold over and over and over and over again. By the time you buy that list of leads, those people have been called soooo many times, they are sick of it. Double -opt in leads are no better. And don't think you are getting fresh leads just because they say so.

I know too many people who maxed out credit cards buying leads like they were told to do. I have even heard of reps who sold their old leads to their downline. Now I ask, who was making the money and from where? Probably not from the biz opp, but off the back of their own people. And before I leave leads, 99 ‘nos', is not always 1 away from that ‘yes'. This is insane. It's only 99 ‘nos'. I would rather bang my head against a brick wall.

15. Understand that creating "multiple streams of income" does NOT really mean joining multiple biz opps. Not many people can maintain more than one marriage... much less more than one 'biz opp'. If you can't get some income generated from joining just one company, don't think you need to just join some more. We call this multiple streams of ‘out-go'. Multiple streams of income really means, make your money, then invest that money in other areas, real estate, stocks, IRA's, Money Markets, etc.... it's like not putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

16. We can't put ourselves into a point of such desperation to find that 'real' deal that we let all common sense go out the window or feed ourselves endless numbers of TUMS to get rid of the bad feeling we have in our gut. If it doesn't sound right, if it sounds too good to be true, please just move on. Trust me, there will be another opportunity right around the corner, regardless of the fear of loss tactics they might be trying to use on you....

I am sure there are other things I should mention, but can't think of them right now. Creating additional income from home is possible, but truly, it doesn't happen over night. Learning this stuff did not happen over night either....and I don't profess to know everything, never will. That is why I too, have mentors.

Good luck and do not be discouraged. Anyone can create additional income or replace their current income and have a life others only dream of.... but again, it takes time, training, a decent comp plan and work..... if you want to contact me directly... for generic information -my email address is complus1@yahoo.com .... I will be more than glad to help in any way I can.

To learn more about what network marketing is all about or how to be successful in creating additional income from home, feel free to download this free resoource. There are no affiliate links, It's all generic information, no companies, products or services mentioned, I gain no credits or points, it's just the straight scoop on why people fail and why it's not you fault if you are failing at creating additional income from home. And no, your information will not be sold or put on some spammer list.

Your blog was informative and helpful. In the back of my mind I knew that all the sites on make a quick buck where scams but I was really hoping that there was at least one site or more out there that wasn't bogus. Guess all dreams eventually have to come crashing down. Thanks for your generous input.

I was wondering what do you think would be a good work at home job for a single 24 years mother who has not had a job in almost two years.

learntosucceed  says:

It really doesn't matter how long it has been since you had a job. The question you have to ask yourself is "do I want a JOB" where income is capped by an hourly wage or a 'business' where income is possibly unlimited. If you are wanting a job, live in the US, and have good customer service skills, there are agencies that actually hire people to work from home, pay an hourly wage based on the contract and hire part-time and full time positions. If you want more information, please feel free to contact me at complus1@yahoo.com... in the subject line, please state that you would like more information. If it is about a JOB, please put that in the body of the email... if it is a business, the same, please give me a clue as to what direction interests you the most. Thanks for commenting and good luck...~jennifer

Jennifer I found the info in your blog to be very enlightening. I am promoting an online store and getting compensated very well as well as being mentored. How to effectively advertise my free web page to receive contacts or leads hasn't been addressed as part of the mentoring tho. Can you offer any suggestions?

Getting leads is an age old problem and I truly don't recommend anyone buying leads. When you consider the fact that 85% of the human race does not like being 'sold', cold calling can be very difficult. Also, you have to consider this truth... 99 'nos' is NOT just 1 more away from that "yes". That is frustrating in the least. Most leads that can be bought are not going to be targeted leads... these people typically just signed up for something and got put on 100 lists that get sold, resold and resold. Since I have another way to contact you I will address this question more in depth there.

I would like to get you and your reads advice. I have found SEVERAL GTP read sites. My biggest fear, which you touched on, is is it legal? I mean they are charging for people to advertise on their site and the ads are legit. So if they do come thru with payment is it "ok"? Many to offer to pay by check along with other options like paypal.

Please send any work at home links you have found that have worked. I am desperate and have been scammed not only out of my own money but I was also sent stolen goods thru a drop shipping scam. The company that was drop shipping for my ebay business was selling and shipping stolen goods. Yes the police had lots of questions for me. I was lucky to have reciepts as to all the transactions.

PLEASE HELP. I have a 5 year old that needs me at home more.

ZSUZSY BEE, thanks for your comment and you have a very valid point.  I dont mind posting links to JOBs I know to be legit, but as far as suggesting a biz opp, that would not be right and would make my blog no better than any other that is actually a promotion for someone's biz opp.  I promote mentoring, learning how to think, not what to think.  And the advice I give is strictly so that people know how to avoid certain things, what to look for in others, and to become critical thinkers.  What works for me in a biz opp may not work for everyone else. Here are two links for sites I have found to be legit references for JOBS.http://www.virtualjobconnection.com/index.html

http://www.womenforhire.com/advice/work_from_home_

Both sites offer very sound information and links to legit companies. As far as Biz opps go I offer this free ebook and suggest that those interested download it and join me in a free mentoring program that absolutely changed my life and the way I look at Network Marketing.

Allan,

Thanks for your comments. Network marketing is not really a selling business but a people business and yes, people begin with us, getting inside ourselves, tweaking and growing. And to go one step further in that labor of love, after we get right with ourselves, then we learn it's not really about us afterall, it's about helping other people fill their needs.

Thank you for the information, I too have been searching for a legitimate work from home opportunity and or job from home. If you could please send me any thing else you might have re; making money from home. I don't have much money to pay for mentoring or coaching, after all that's why I am on here looking for work from home. My husband lost his job after 25 years with the same co. and I own and operate a nail salon. I am sole proprietor. I need to work a second job and can not commit to set hours, I have to be available for my clients when they need me. Can you please help and guide me in the right direction. I have been searching and have spent money I don't have, this month makes 1 full year since I have started searching. I have spent countless hours on here, trying to teach myself what all the lingo means. I have learned a little on my own. But still have not made any money.

Hi there, your story sounds a lot like mine did at first....You are in luck, the mentoring we offer is FREE and I think will truly help you... I know that it literally saved me and has countless others.

Just click on the link up above for successin10steps that is located in one of my comments, download the free ebook and give it a read.  All our training calls are generic.  No one is allowed to mention products or company names.  And the mentoring and training calls really are all free.  Once you understand why it is not your fault you are failing, you will know how to pay forward to someone else who needs help too.

We'll talk soon.~jennifer

Thanks for spending your time in answering my question on egold. Its through the Yahoo Answering System that I I got you and your answer, amazing how modern technology bless people's need for replies.

People who are either so dispaired from their economic crisis, greed for more, or simply searching for answers and knowledge like us - kept ourselves busy browsing and scanning the internet for true success, and which we know is Biblically right.

Can you recommed to us other ebooks or other materials that can guide us into the furtherance of mentoring? Because I want to start mentoring our own Filipino people who in the poor condition become victim by the MLM's sweet talking. Desiring to earn they lost, and from little they end up zero. Very pitiful, if no one will offer them help for prevention, we will be consumed by the covetous hunger of the corrupt.

We can chat with you if it is permited. Again thanks. More power to you!

Thankyou for this, I have been researching 'working for myself' and 'working on the internet' for a few months and the wasted paths and hours of reading i've done are endless. However I have found out enough to make me excited, enthusiastic and determined. Luckily I am too poor to spend money on so called 'systems' or ebooks. I have downloaded free ebooks and some have good information others are badly written veils for an advert. I do think ebooks could become useful sources of information, entertainment etc - like blogging but they have some way to go.

To add to your point 15 'multiple income streams' diluting your time and energy too soon can mean you dont focus on what you are doing and when it gets tough or boring it's too easy to say 'I must just spend time setting this next thing up'.

I would love some support with the things I am finding tough, planning my time (two children), managing money and writting a business plan.

I love the concept of mentoring - thankyou for this hub and I hope you can point me in the direction of some help with my planning.

Hi Porter,

I am just beggining to understand the tricks and trade of the internet and how to earn from the internet. In fact if you notice I have just signed up just recently since It is only now that I have heard about hubpages through another revenue earning program which I have joined. Although new to this set up, I agree with you that there are a lot of scams in the internet, however there are also programs and sites that really pays. I have learned a lot from your post and will be reading your articles from time to time. Thanks for this page, Jennifer. I just might add to those that are searching and cannot afford this system or that ebook, if you google some of the top Internet Marketers, sign up on their lists, they are in the habit these days of giving out tons of free QUALITY information. Eventually there will be a pitch, but I spent time on several lists and for the first year of my buisness life online, did not spend a penny and learned a lot. At least enough to get some momentum where I could afford a class or seminar here or there.

In these days of Web 2.0, the info is out there, especially for those entering the work from world.

Thanks for your insight into the world of online programs. Many services exist out there that don't do much for their clients. Using due diligence and asking questions always helps before signing up for anything. And never pay upfront without knowing what you are getting.

Hi Jennifer - I enjoyed reading your hub very much, and it contains sage advice. Due diligence is important when considering a programme - many people just join on the basis of the launch hype, and have unrealistic views of just how much work is needed for success in a programme - you don't get anywhere without effort.

Ms Jennifer , You paid to gain all the wisdom that you are sharing here free! You invested time, money and your emotions to reach at this level where you can tell all of us here that it is not all gold that glitters. To me internet is not a place to earn money for a simple human being. For a crooked scammer yes.

I like your hub,

do feel you are vague in some areas.

Although I like your point that you are advising how to think not what to think.

I hope by the numbers of comments this is working extremely well.

thank you

Thanks for some great advice. I have a question: I've been writing about antiques and collecting for almost 30 years. Now, thanks to the Internet, I can put my writing online. My website is http://www.writeantiques.com.

My question is, how can I make the website help pay for itself. I have Google ads on there, but I'm lucky if I make a dollar a day. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Good info especially for the novice network marketer or anyone else interested in learning how to work from home using the internet . . . without going broke in the process.

Kind regards,

The Internet has been a welcome respite for thousands of individuals who seek for opportunities to start making money from home. Unfortunetly, with the massive surge of scams which feed on unsuspecting victims, it is becoming a struggle to stay afloat. Thank you for sharing your views and suggestions.

Thank you for posting this article. I, too, am looking for a home-based typing job, as I am currently a stay-at-home mom who is looking to bring in some extra money for my family. Please advise.

Thanks again! :)

Great Hub. Thank you for the advice. I have been looking for work online for 2 years now. Unfortunately, the search has been buried in scams and schemes. If you have advice about legitimate jobs online I would really appreciate it. My email is cindymaria@myway.com. Thanks

survey site is the most scam website.

I prefer to be an adsense publisher and paid to review.....it's easier and safer.

Hi Jennifer,

I am inspired on what you say and all the advices , I am working online but not the usual survey affiliate etc, I am working as data entry provider and it is well compensated, I do my job 4-6 hrs 6 times a week. It's like working on the office in the convinient of your home, and the best of this work I can be with my children too.
