56Snoring can be one of the more annoying aspects of sleep, especially for those that share a bed with a snorer! Most of us will snore at some point in our lives if only for a brief period of time due to illness (most people snore when they have a heavy cold, whether they admit it or not). It is worth understanding the mechanics of snoring before you try and work out how to stop. Snoring is caused by the soft palate in your mouth vibrating. The soft palate is the back part of the roof of your mouth. This can happen for all manner of reasons. The muscle tone in your soft palate and tongue decreases when you sleep, which means they may end up touching and contribute to snoring. Tonsils can also contribute to snoring. Basically anything that obstructs your airway while you sleep is likely to make you snore. Alcohol is also another culprit as this tends to relax muscle tone even more, meaning that after a heavy night out snoring is almost inevitable. Lying on your back also encourages snoring as your tongue moves further back against your soft palate creating even more noise.
If you find you snore then try changing your sleeping position to see if that helps. Try to avoid alcohol before bed. Speak to you doctor if you are taking prescription medications as they may have the side-effect of causing snoring. You may also benefit from loosing weight if you have a high BMI.
