3 Ways to Save $200 Per Month on your Food Budget with the Aerogarden

Last summer, my spouse put together an elaborate plan to grow a nice vegetable garden that would give us lovely produce all summer long, and well into the autumn. He began planning for this in January, taking time to write out a complete budget, supply list, and exactly how and where he was going to grow his garden. He was a regular Farmer MacGregor.

When the first warm day came after the snow melted, he began pricing all the supplies, and we planned for it in the budget. He began buying all the supplies he would need to build a fence and plant his seeds. Before he started building, however, he set up all his seeds in little cups, with a special mixture that was supposed to germinate his seeds into plants that would be ready to put into the soil outside. This didn't produce much and he had to start over. But this time, he chose to put the seeds directly into the soil that was housed in big plastic bins. Long story short-we had a very poor growing season, and all that work and money went to waste, as we still had to spend money on produce throughout the summer. In all, he probably spent around $1,500 for the garden that never worked. If we had the Aerogarden or the Aerogarden Pro, this would not have happened...

What is the Aerogarden Pro, and how can you save money every month with it on your food budget? The Aerogarden Pro is basically the Aerogarden that has a longer arm for the grow lights, and optional programming capabilities to grow plants faster and larger. There is also the option to grow your own seeds with the Aerogarden Pro. So how does this help you save money? That is what I am going to tell you in this article. You will learn how to start with one Aerogarden Pro, and turn it into an indoor, money saving, and potentially, a money making, dirtless garden.

Set up a Wall Unit with Vegetables

The very simplest thing you can do to start saving money in the long run on your grocery bills each month is to get one unit complete with a shelf that you can hang on your wall, to save space on your counters. When you buy this unit, the default package of seeds that comes with it is the gourmet herb pack. This is a great kit to get started with, because of the high success rate with herbs. Most herbs are resilient, which makes this the perfect starting kit for those who have never gardened much before. And it is also great for those just starting out with growing things in this manner.

And now, saving money...if you cook with herbs quite often, this could save you about $50 a month or more, as you have your own source of fresh herbs when you need it. However, if you do not cook with fresh herbs that much, this will be a new learning experience for you as you begin working with herbs in the kitchen. And if you do not know how to use herbs, don't worry-they give you a recipe and how to guide with every unit. Once you get over the learning curve of how to use your unit, and how to grow herbs, you can start using vegetables. Now the smaller fruits and vegetables like cherry tomatoes and strawberries can be grown quite nicely in the original Aerogarden, but if you want to grow larger vegetables, you will need a longer arm unit to accommodate the larger plants.

With your next crop of plants, choose a vegetable that you use quite frequently. Tomatoes...cucumbers...etc. These are the plants you want to grow in your Aerogarden Pro, as you will not have to buy any for a very long time, once they ripen and mature. It is very easy to grow, and require a few minutes per month to maintain, versus what happened to my spouse after hours and hours of work on his garden that never produced one vegetable. This will help save a lot more than $200 just in set up costs, as illustrated in the story at the beginning of this article.

Grow Your Own Seeds

There is another option available to you if you want to grow other plants than what the company has for you. They have a Master Gardener kit where they give you empty grow pods, and instructions on how to set up your pods for a successful growing season. You could virtually grow any fruit or vegetable that you could grow in dirt (with the exception of berry bushes or tropical fruit). Just get normal seeds from the store, and then follow instructions. If you were to do this with several wall units, you could have an indoor garden that would save as much as, if not more than, $200 per month if you planned it out well.

For example, if you use tomatoes, green beans, salads, and other such common vegetables, and you wrote these out in a plan of what to get and how many units to buy, you could literally shave hundreds of dollars off your grocery bill with all the food your units would produce. Think about it-how much money do you use each shopping trip on produce? On fresh herbs? And then, how much of that goes bad before you can use it? How much money have you wasted? A lot-right? Well...when you plan out an entire garden that you can grow indoors without dirt, expensive equipment, or a lot of time, would you be interested? Keep reading to see how to create an entire indoor garden with multiple wall units.

Create an Entire Indoor Garden with Multiple Wall Units

Picture yourself walking to your lush and prosperous organic garden...taking just what you need to make a meal...enjoying the fresh taste of homegrown vegetables, fruit and herbs. You have all the produce you will ever need at your fingertips, always fresh...always ready for you when you need it. The best part? You only have to spend around 10 minutes per month to maintain this fresh paradise!

How? The Aerogarden-all designs-are equipped with software that monitors everything from the grow light time, to the water level, to the nutrients. When water is too low, a light will come on to alert you that you need to add water. (30 seconds to a minute) If the water needs more nutrients, another light will go on, letting you know that you need to add two nutrient tablets. (30 seconds.) That happens about every two weeks.

Pruning the plants and harvesting takes about 3-5 minutes...lifting the grow arm when needed...it all adds up to very little maintenance on your part, with all the results of hard work and hours and hours of back breaking labor.

So, how do you create an indoor garden? Multiple wall units and a temperature controlled environment dedicated to growing plants. The key here is to plan out what you want to plant, before you buy the units. This allows you to get the necessary equipment, without having to buy unnecessary items. For the smaller vegetables and all the herbs, you will only need the original Aerogarden. For the larger vegetables, and for growing your own seeds you will need the Aerogarden Pro. For all, you need several wall unit shelves, designed to hold 3 units at once.

Once your equipment arrives, unpack all pieces, and read the instructions for set-up and planting thoroughly for best succcess. Next, clear a space in your home...set up your wall shelves, and then install your garden units. Plant...wait....save money...enjoy!
