Affiliate Marking Explained
60Essentially, affiliate marketing is the promotion and sale of a product or service for the company that owns it. For every sale that is generated as a result of the ‘affiliate’s’ promotions and marketing activities, the affiliate receive a commission. An affiliate can be affiliated with more than one company and promote multiple products and/or services at any one time.
With internet affiliate marketing, the affiliate receives a unique URL which will have their specific affiliate ID (affiliate identification) attached to it. So that every person who goes to the site, using that particular ID, will be identified as having come from that affiliate’s marketing efforts. When a potential customer goes to the site through your affiliate link their internet browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox etc) will put what is called a cookie on their system also linked to your affiliate identification. What that means is that if the customer goes doesn’t purchase immediately, but goes back at a later date and buys the product, the sale will still be credited to your affiliate ID. The cookie will last for varying amounts of time – depending on how the company has set up their system. Usually they last about 60 days, but there are some that only last minutes and some that last a lifetime!
There are two ways that the majority of companies pay their affiliates – either they will pay per each lead or pay a certain amount per sale. The pay per lead system means that the affiliate gets paid when their actions lead to a link being clicked on or a contact form being filled in – whether this actually leads to a sale is irrelevant for the affiliate as they are being paid per lead. The pay per sale system means that the affiliate only gets paid when a sale results from their marketing and promotions, this can come in two forms, either a fixed amount per sale or a percentage of each sale. This system works really well for the company who produces the products because they only have to pay for results, and the affiliate does the rest.
If you are thinking of getting started as an affiliate marketer, you will need to consider several factors. Firstly, it’s a good idea to choose a product that is popular easy to promote and has keywords that you can use to rank really well with on the search engines. The best place to start is to find products that solve a problem, for example something that may solve how to get rid of something or stop something from happening. People that are searching for this kind of information are usually very keen to find a solution to their problem and therefore more likely to buy than those who are just browsing.
After testing and finding successful products in this category you can then use the methods that have worked to promote others also. Finding proven methods is the key – once you have that, you can use it in any market and increase your earnings exponentially.
