These tips will help you maximize the money you can make with affiliate marketing:

  • Use unique Web pages to promote each product you market. Don't lump everything together just to save some money on hosting.
  • Include product reviews and testimonials from users who have already tried the product. Be sure these customers will allow you to use their names and photos on the site of the specific product you are marketing.
  • Write articles highlighting product features and benefits and link them from your Web site as additional pages. Make the article pages attractive and compelling and include calls to act at the end of each one.
  • Offer free reports to your readers that can be obtained by registering on your Web site. Position links or ads to receive these reports these reports at the top of the home page so they won't be missed and direct them to a sign-up form that captures visitors' information. Create autoresponder messages that will be automatically mailed to people who input their personal information into the form.
  • Once you have collected e-mail addresses, send solicitations that present the features and benefits of the product in a compelling way and also allow the recipient to opt out of the list. According to research, a sale is usually closed only after the seventh contact with a prospect, so keep sending the solicitations -- but make sure not to spam by sending too frequently.
  • Write articles for publication in e-zines and e-reports and place them in article directories, such as GoArticles.com and EzineArticles.com. This will help you locate publications that are focused on your target customers.

Experienced marketers and newbies alike find that affiliate programs are a great way to make money. But as with any other business venture, there are things to watch out for. Fortunately, with some common sense, patience and by following the tips below, you don't have to go through the common pitfalls that plague many affiliate marketers.

Here are some of the most common mistakes people make with affiliate marketing:

Joining too many affiliate programs

Since affiliate programs are easy to join, you might be tempted to take on many of them to maximize your earnings. True, this approach does have the potential to give you multiple income sources. But joining too many programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time could also prevent you from concentrating properly on each one. The result could be that the maximum potential of each affiliate program won't be realized and the income probably won't measure up to your expectations.

If you're new to affiliate marketing, try joining just one or two programs that pay at least 30 percent in commissions. Then promote your products enthusiastically and when you begin to make a profit, you can implement another affiliate program.

Not buying the product or using the service

As an affiliate, your main purpose is to effectively promote a product or service and to find customers. It's difficult to do this if you're not familiar with what you're promoting. Try the product or service personally before you sign up as an affiliate. This will allow you to see if it's really delivering what it promises. If it does, you can then convey your confidence in the product or service to your potential customers.

Choosing an affiliate program that isn't a good fit for you

Many people want to earn from affiliate programs as fast as possible. In their rush to be part of a program, they jump on the bandwagon without actually considering if the product appeals to them. Instead of taking the first thing that comes along, choose a product that truly interests you. Then do some research to see if it's in demand. Promoting a product you're passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

Here are some additional suggestions for choosing the right affiliate program for you:

  • Choose programs that cater to a growing target market. This will ensure there will be continuous demands for your referrals. Make inquiries by using forums, discussion groups and by talking to current affiliates.
  • Look for a program that is of high quality and is associated with experts in that particular industry.
  • If you can, find a program with a compensation plan that pays out residual income in addition to giving commissions of 30 percent or more. Don't waste your time with programs that don't reward you well for your efforts.
  • Select an affiliate program that has plenty of tools and resources to help you grow the business in the shortest possible time. Not all affiliate programs have these, so it's important to ask what resources they offer.
  • Be aware of minimum quotas you have to fulfill or sales targets that are too hard to achieve. Some affiliate programs impose prerequisites before you can receive commissions. Be sure you're going to be capable of meeting their requirements.
  • See if the program has a system that allows you to check your networks and compensation. Also check if they have this information available online.
  • Check if the program offers strong incentives for members to renew their memberships. These incentives can help ensure the growth of your network.
  • Be aware of what other members aren't happy about with the program. As mentioned above, you can do your checking at discussion forums.

Find Your Niche

Maybe you want to begin affiliate marketing but don't know where to start. The video below gives impartial information on researching "niches" or categories of products to sell:

For more information on affiliate marketing, there are many videos available on YouTube.com. Just do a search for "affiliate marketing."

YouTube has a voting system that will tell you in advance whether a video has the potential to be helpful. Another way to determine this is by the number of times a video has been viewed. Not that a video with few views can't have value (it might be new) but chances are that one that has received that many views contains content you can really use.
