Afghan Girl with Green Eyes

The photo of the Afghan girl with green eyes by Steve McCurry first appeared on the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1985. Seventeen years later McCurry returned to Afghanistan and succeeded in locating the woman he had photographed so memorably as a girl. She remembered being angry at being photographed by McCurry for the first time in her life. But she allowed him to photograph her again. The two photos are linked below.

Thanks. I missed the documentary. Did they get married and live happily ever after? Just kidding. An arresting photo of a beautiful girl.

I saw the follow up photo done years later. She didn't want her photo taken again and had to be persuaded. I thing that this photo is so arresting that people remember it.

She did get married and had 4 children however 1 died , thank you for the follow up story on her and the before and after photos, it is sad that people have to suffer and you can tell by her face that she is very hardened. Her eyes are piercing and then you come to the U.S. photos, they eyes are softened, calm and happy. Great photos Ralph and thank you for the story as well. :)

AE, thx for the comment. I took the pictures at the Beach Grill at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The girl with blue eyes and the African American girl were hosetesses. The others were waiting in line for tables adjacent to where we were sittiing.

I remember seeing that photo when it first came out. I thought, how haunting, those are one of the most beautiful pair of eyes I've seen.

You are a wonderful photographer and are an inspiration for many to pull out those cameras and just start clicking.:) The young afghan girls eyes are haunting and mystical it is so sad that her life has been so hard. :(

I saw the documentary. I was astonishing how the woman had aged. She was young by western standards, but looked to be middle-aged from years of struggles.

she has a name people look it but but just in case i have done the work for you's this is Her story NOw she dose not live in USA never did the girl up top is some one els and not her look at the nose it not even the same.. ead on...

Her name is Sharbat Gula. She's the married mother of three girls and living in a remote ethnic Pushtun region of Afghanistan with her family. National Geographic is keeping her exact location secret to protect her privacy. McCurry says he will be helping Gula provide an education for her children and to fulfill her dream of making a pilgrimage to Mecca next year. Even after all these years, the photographer still fawns over his most famous subject. Gula's eyes have retained all their fire and intensity, he says. She has aged, "but I think she's still quite beautiful despite all the hardship that people have to endure there."

When I first saw the young green eyed girl It held my attention for no less than ten min. I was was filled with emotions I can not even begin to discribe. Sadness, fear, pain, a over welming desire to reach out and take some of the pain away to being held back by some strange fear. To this day the picture does the same thing, I can not explain it any better. Michael Swinfard
