African violets are more dependent on regular care than most other house plants, they are sensitive to dryness, so it is wise to check the soil moisture every few days. When you care for you African Violets they will reward you with long lasting blooms. African violets are known to adapt very well to typical growing conditions found in many homes. Violets are know to grow better in an environment of 60 to 80 degrees F. but higher temperatures do not normally cause long term harm . African violets are susceptible to root and crown rot if over watered they are sensitive to standing water around the crown or water on foliage.

African Violets are best watered from the bottom by setting them in the sink or a saucer. If watering from the top, be careful not to get water on the leaves as they will spot. Watering African violets is often the most difficult part of their care. Most people develop a water schedule where they water all violets once a week. I do not recommend this approach due to some plants may be older, larger or in more vigorous growth then others and so therefore may not be using water as quickly. I recommend putting your finger into the top 1/2" of soil and checking for moisture. If the soil is dry water until some water escapes from the drainage holes. This is very important as it reduces fertilizer build up in the soil by diffusing it to this excess water. Never allow Violets to stand in excess water within the tray or saucer for more that a couple of minutes pour off all of the excess water. Failure to pour off the excess water could lead to reabsorbtion of the water containing the excess nutrients.
