African cuisine in Johannesburg - South Africa
67Eating out Africa style
Africa's delicious cuisine is something you have to taste if you are ever to visit South Africa!
If it's not 'cosmopolitanly' African - it's not African. The real food is a fusion of east, west, north and south's cuisine. In recent years chefs have started experimenting with fusion cooking. Taking the best of everything and adding their own special magic into the mix.
Restaurants in Johannesburg that serve African cuisine are scarce, but those that serve these delectable African dishes are gems that have no rivals.
One of the most well-known African cuisine restaurants is Moyo. Moyo has 2 branches in Johannesburg, Zoo Lake and Melrose Arch. Both these restaurants have excellet reputations for service and ambience.
Entering any of these two restaurants you are met by staff dressed in browns and whites with purple feather hats. The décor is tastefully rustic with African sculptures and Moroccan style lighting.
Menus are made from copper with with Moyo stenciled on the front. Reading the menu you cannot help but wish that you can taste every entrée, main course and dessert... (Ample portions are served - so, don't worry about the prices of some of the dishes!)
Every dish is served in African pottery to enhance the experience. (Do try their complimetary bread with the delicious smears!)
Face painters will offer to paint your face while you are waiting to be served. Their face painting adds a magic touch to the whole Moyo dining experience.
Entertainment is in the form of African artists, singers, Mbira (instrument) players, storytellers and dancers. Each artist fills the room with their stage personality and truly captures the dining crowd's attention.
Each Moyo has a store where you can buy souvenirs, CDs, books, lamp shades, etc to remember this truly unique restaurant.
Moyo has branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town and hopefully more soon.

Thanks for sharing. There is a lot about africa that people don't know and never bother to ask. Most of the things i see on the media about africa is so negative it hurts!
