Age of Empires is an epic real-time strategy game spanning 10,000 years, in which players are guiding the spirit in the evolution of small stone age tribes. Starting with minimal resources, players are challenged to build their tribes into great civilizations.

Gamers can choose from one of the several ways to win the game, including world domination by conquering enemy civilizations, exploration of the known world and economic victory through the accumulation of wealth.

The first title - Age of Empires was released in 1997, since then 7 titles and 3 spin-offs have come out from the makers- Ensemble Studio. The titles are real-time strategy games with 2 mode of play, Random Map and Campaign.

The games are set amidst historical events. The first 2 titles focused on events in Europe and Asia Minor, from stone age to classical period. One games explored the formation and rise of Roman empire. The next 2 games focused on Europe during the middle ages. The next three games focused on the pre modern period.

The Age of Empires was a commercial hit as they sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The credibility of Ensemble Studios gained after this series and now they are one of the most respected studio in the field of Strategy gaming.

The game play is good and it might take you days to complete a campaign. War in land and sea simultaneously really challenge your skills. There are even trebuchets shooting fireballs through the air. To tackle all these together is a difficult task. You have to gather resources using your men and then build architectural structures such as houses, archery range, barracks, stable, market, monastries etc. There are a lot of buildings to be completed as the requirement arises. You have options to evolve from one age to the next higher age. You can advance from the stone age to the imperial age. As you advance all your units will be upgraded.

The only thing the game lacks is trade options. There is no trade options. You have to fight and take the resources. Its totally FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT inorder to survive. This too makes it interesting.
