How did Agriculture affect the earliest Civilizations?
Since the dawn of agriculture history has proven to be more complex. When hunter gathers transition to agriculture, there seems to be an evolution of culture, religion and increase of population that is abundant. How did the climate play a role in the transition from hunter gathers too an agriculture life style? What impact did agriculture have on a society and the roles that each person played? Why did structured societies emerge from the dawn of agriculture? How did this affect the world’s population?
When history begins to see agriculture emerge is in a time and place where the climate was arid. There does not seem to be many fresh water sources in the areas where the first agricultures existed. There are many explanations or theories as too how agriculture emerged, People who counted on water as part of there survival must have lived and hunted near dependable water sources. Every land has some form of plant life that would be native to that land. These early ancestors could have noticed the cycles in which such plants where growing, how water created that growth. Or they could have not knowingly dispersed seeds and than later found that plants where growing. There will never be a clear answer to how the first crop was harvested. What is clear is that the climate of the land and time in which agriculture emerged is very important as it forced a nomadic people to stay close to dependable water sources , leading to the understanding that where there was water there was plants that sustained the animals and why not them. As well the harsh weather also forced people to stay for extended periods of time near the water source allowing for the people to truly observe and understand the environment around them making use of all that was available.
It is not assumed that hunting faded away after agriculture began. But there is no doubt that agriculture changed the dynamics of a village or gathering society. Agriculture is much more complex than spreading seeds and waiting. There must have been many years where there was no yield of crops and others where there was an abundant yield. Forcing the people to continue to hunt, and use the practices of there ancestors. With the knowledge of agriculture the people became increasingly aware of the cycles throughout the year gathering knowledge.
This indeed had a great impact on the roles that each person played within there group. Men must have continued to hunt. Forcing each member to a have specific role, woman , kids , elders all must have played a role in maintaining, plowing , harvesting, caring for domesticated animals, and exploring. This most surely strengthened the bonds of a group of people. Where each role must have been satisfied or all roles where hurt, with the failure of one person. This leads to the complex society that is shown to emerge with agriculture.
Complex societies emerge as a direct result of agriculture there is no clear data as to how long or how many times a group of people failed at agriculture. What is known is that as people did not have to move from water source to another, as these people each had a vital role to play in the success of failure of there group many changes begin to happen. One of the most basic is that of being social. Once all necessary needs are meat, Food, shelter etc. Than people must have found that there social needs increased, the need to be creative, or to talk and socialize with the other members of the group. What happen when outsiders came across there group, that need to be social must have created a welcoming experience where exchanges of ideas occurred, as the generations passed and a group of people turned into a village and so on. There are then the needs of the overall good of the people, Regulation of those who do not follow certain behavior expectations, protection from outsiders, and delegation of goods to each person. These are the reason that we see such cultures emerge, because with more people and more supplies came a whole lot of needs that need to be met. Religion as well , there must have been a need to have a conduct code and this can only be implemented with a sense that you are being guided to the good of all , by that deity that controls the climate and the good or bad that befalls you. All of these complex aspects of culture only made possible by the fact that humans went from survival mode to have immediate needs met and time to explore the emotional and creative parts of human nature.
With agriculture came many changes in the way the people of the world lived and interacted with each other. Nowhere is this more visible in the dramatic increase of population. It was not to the benefit of a hunter gatherer to have many offspring, as there where many setbacks to having too many mouths to feed and kids lack the strength to hunt. Now that agriculture is present there seems to be a use for offspring in the daily to do’s of planting and harvesting. Not only for labor reasons do we see a increase in populations, but for the simple fact that people got comfortable and where better able to embrace other activities, as well as there not be a lack of food you can welcome mew life when it comes. This increase plays a role in complex societies as now the people must shelter and govern such a growing
Population, eventually leading to trade and the spread of ideas, language and eventually writing. In conclusion the emergence of complex and stratified societies is due solely to the introduction of agriculture as a viable food source, Allowing for a complex animal such as the human to fully
Evolve the emotional and creative aspects of the human nature. Life was no longer based on a day to day need to eat and sleep. Agriculture allowed humans to feed the mind body and spirit. Thanks to the evolution of agriculture we are the people we see today.
