Air Compressor Parts

Want to be a road warrior? Try using an air compressor to scare people. This was almost too funny because I had a bunch of air compressor parts from a broken air compressor. This ended up into a whole Saturday project. My friend had purchased a truck to move his DJ stuff around and the truck had these air horns on the top of the roof of the cab that no longer worked and he did not have a horn that worked.

My friend had started complaining about how he has a new respect for those truck drivers because people don’t pay attention to larger trucks and tend to cut them off. I was actually pretty surprised when I heard this. I have always been under the impression if your vehicle is bigger than me then I will have to make room for you. I then told him it was probably because you have offensive car stickers on your truck

I pulled out the old air compressor in the truck and started to take the thing apart. This was a pretty small air compressor so I had to put a plug on the thing because they had hard wired the air compressor to the fuse box. I thought this was strange because it seems like it would continue to draw on the battery when it was not running. I figured when I re wired it we would just go right the alternator and splice the battery cable. The thing was pretty small; it was about 1/8HP with an auto stop at 60PSI. I was surprised this little thing would put out 60. The air compressor was so small that it did not need any oil. It was one of that is Oil-less maintenance free air compressors. I suppose that is why I was working on it now (sarcasm). This air compressor looked like one of those small compressors they used for art or to spray body paint. We hauled this thing over to my bench and wired a plug onto the thing and plugged it in, to our surprise this thing ran like charm. I suppose it was most likely wired incorrectly or the connections were in bad shape when it was hooked to the truck. We hooked up it up and realized a hole in the airline. So, we ended up going to the store to by some parts to put a new Nylon air hose on the compressor. I took off the hose fittings on one of the junk air compressor I bought for parts and we changed the spring guard added a nut that came across the ferrule into the tube insert and added a male/female fitting to screw into the existing connection leading to the air horn.

I started the truck and watched and listened as the air compressor filled up with air and shut off. I then told my friend to check the connection. I of course had my hand on the blow gun that was installed right next to the driver’s seat. I hit pressed the handle and low and behold that air horn was so loud I think my buddy about peed his pants because it scared him and he was in front of the vehicle checking the connection. My wife and kids came out of the house to see what in the world was going on. One of the neighbors had also come outside. I was laughing so hard I could barely talk as I wiped the tears from eyes. With a few air compressor parts my friend turned into a road warrior.
