Flying has become a common form of travel, in fact today, most businesses fly all over the world and country for meetings, people fly for vacation, travel, etc. Flying is part of life, and clearly a great way to travel when you want to get somewhere quickly, yet there are still problems with delayed flights, airport congestion, bad weather conditions, and more. One of the best ways to circumvent the problems that come from flights leaving late, being delayed in the air, etc. is to be able to check airline carrier flight status.

There are any number of companies that allow you to track flights for free, or at a low membership cost. You can call an airline at any time for a flight status update. Generally, these status reports can be found for US and Canadian flights readily and easily. However, tracking Trans-Atlantic, Trans-Pacific, and Central/South American flights may be more difficult, or the tracking may contain errors in the data because of lack of transoceanic radar coverage once the flight leaves FAA tracking range. So, when we discuss airline flight status trackers that are not directly from the airline, we are going to be talking about mainly US and Canadian flights.

First, let's take a look at why one would want to use a flight status application:

Make Flying Easier:

The main reason you would want to sign up for, enroll in, or simply go online and use a flight status application is that it is going to make flying easier. How? The more informed you are, the easier it is.

No matter where you fly in the world, your flight will be affected by airport conditions, weather conditions, and other factors that you as a passenger on the flight have little or no control over. When you use a flight status application, you can know better what to expect when you travel. In other words, you can be prepared for any possible problems that could occur. For example, you can relay messages to your business that you may not arrive in time because weather is causing delays, or the airport you are flying into is congested.

Airline flight status applications make flying and maneuvering the airport easier for not just those taking the flight, but also those handling pickup or drop off.

When you use an airline flight status application you get to see how weather, congestion, and time of day are likely to impact your flight. Then you can make educated decisions about when to board your plane, when to arrive at the airport, how early you should schedule your flight if you need to arrive at your destination by a certain time, etc. Some airline flight status applications even allow you to check anticipated security wait times at your terminal and gate, making your precious time go further because you won't get to the airport two hours early anticipating long security waits only to sail right through.

One of the best ways that these airline flight status applications make flying easier is that most of them allow you to get updates on their website, over the phone, or will even email or text message you flight tracking information that you request. That way, if you are catching lunch in the airport, and find out your flight has been delayed, you can relax a little longer with your coffee instead of rushing to sit in the terminal.

Web and mobile flight tracking applications usually allow you to track the status of any flight arriving or departing the United States or Canada. Get updates on flight arrival and delay times, and remaining time en route for departed flights, and more. Some offer real time status, others are updated every 5 minutes, etc.

So what if you are picking someone up at the airport and can't remember when their flight gets in or what gate or terminal they will arrive at. Most airline flight trackers provide additional flight details including departure time, aircraft type, current altitude, and current groundspeed, along with the forecasted weather conditions for your selected destination, which terminal they will arrive at, the approximate time of arrival, airport congestion (or in other words how long it will take to deboard once landed and get luggage). If you learn how to use these handy applications that offer real-time flight information, you will arrive just in time, every time, and stop wasting time in airport parking lots.

Informed travelers and guests are key to smooth airport operations and pleasant flying experiences, so using a flight status application is great for making the whole process easier.

What Airline Flight Status Checkers or Applications Generally Show:

Arrivals: this is the basics, it includes when they were supposed to arrive, and whether the flight is late or early. Most give a real time update as to when the arrival should take place. This of course is calculated by weather conditions, airport congestion, and airspeed, altitude, etc.

Departures: If the carrier you are flying on gets in from a previous flight late, your flight will be delayed, or may depart later than normal. If you are heading to the airport and can't remember when your flight is supposed to take off, these handy applications can help. They offer departure information for scheduled flights, and real time updates for when they actually will depart if not at the scheduled time.

Delays: Delays are common at airports thanks to not being able to perfectly predict weather, mechanical problems, etc. So, a flight status checker, or application is going to keep you updated about delays at the airport, it will send you specific information pertaining to your flight, such as if the carrier was delayed on a previous flight, and that is affecting yours, or if another carrier, using the same terminal and gate was delayed, and thus delayed yours.

Schedules Changes:
Even though changing flight times is rare, it does happen. Sometimes flight schedules are changed because of inclement weather at an arrival city, or an alternate route needing to be taken because of something similar. So, a flight status application will let you know if there are any changes to the flight schedule you are booked on.

Airport Status:
This is very handy. The flight status application does not just tell you what is going on with the carriers, but also what is happening at the airport you are departing from, or arriving at. For example, if it is closed because of weather, you will get a notification, or if there is a lot of traffic because something or someone important is there, or if it is smooth sailing, security wait is long, short, etc. you can find out.

Flight Weather:
Weather affects flights, delays, arrivals, and departures more than you might think, with a flight status application, you can know how the flight weather is supposed to be for your flight, and whether or not any delays are anticipated as a result of this.

How to use an airline flight status checker:

Every flight status application is different. However, most are similar. Usually you will input what information you know or have, such as the airline you are flying on, the flight number if you have it, destination, departure city, etc. This will get you specific information about your flight.

For other flight status applications, you input the airport, and they pull up a list of all outgoing and incoming flights, and you can check to see if that flight's on time.

Or, another option many flight status applications have is that you can sign up to get e-mail, voice, or text message updates sent to the device of your choice. When you do this you put in flight information like in the first example, but instead of having to check back at the website frequently, any updates are sent to you.

Most flight status applications will allow the following three things:

  1. Quick glance flight status check, where you check to see if your flight is on time.
  2. Text messaging, email, or voicemail, where updates about specific flights and airport conditions are texted, emailed, or left as a message to your phone in real time.
  3. Mobile access. This is where you get the flight status application address to your internet phone so you get immediate updates.

Being aware of the conditions of your flight can save you from unwanted headaches, missed business meetings with no way to let people know where you are and what you are doing, sitting at the airport for too long, being stuck somewhere with no where to sleep, being late or early to pick someone up from the airport, and more. It is a very convenient, and usually free service you can take advantage of. If you do not want to use a commercial flight status application, you can always call the airline for the same information, however, generally airlines won't text updates to your phone.
