One of the hottest costume trends for this Halloween and next may just be Alice in Wonderland characters. With Tim Burton’s upcoming take on the classic tale, people are itching to become Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat.

In recent years, it’s become easier than ever to find quality costumes of more obscure characters. Currently, there are a number of Alice costumes on the market ranging from sweet to suggestive. More recently, a number of Cheshire Cat costumes, as well as White Rabbit costumes have hit the market giving those who love Alice even more options for costuming.

For each character there are several key factors to keep in mind when choosing your costume.

Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat is a character you can really play with creatively. While the cat is normally seen as its depiction in Disney’s animated film: fat, pink and purple with a leering grin. If there’s anything that is uniform about all incarnations of the Cheshire Cat, it’s the character’s wide, almost sinister grin. There are some Cheshire Cat costumes on the market, but creative license and a bit of ingenuity can make the Cheshire Cat into a character of your own styling as long as you wear that grin.

Alice

Perhaps of all the characters in Alice in Wonderland, Alice is the most versatile. Traditionally, she is dressed in a light blue dress with white apron and black shoes. Her hair is usually blonde with bangs and a headband/ribbon over the top. However, in American McGee’s incarnation of Alice, Alice takes on a darker hair color while still keeping the traditional blue and white dress. In the trailers for Tim Burton’s films, Alice’s dress has some slight changes, but still remains the light blue of the traditional character’s dress.

The Queen of Hearts

This character’s trademark dress, consisting of colors found primarily in a standard deck of playing cards, is often portrayed as Tudor style dress that would be worn by royalty. High collar, full skirt – this dress can be found through costume retailers in a number of patterns and colors.

The Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter’s signature costume consists of his hat, complete with “In this style 10/6” tag tacked to the side, overcoat and a pair of kickin’ shoes. While many components of this character’s costume can be played with, one thing that should always be included is the hat.

Can't wait for the movie to come out. I really like what Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create when they pair up.
