Out of the Vortex
Central Ohio and the entire center third of the state seem to comprise a vortex of sorts. Many unexplained and unusual events and people have congregated within the funnel, some staying, some passing through. Not all of the occurrences in this area of the state can be explained.
Route 40 cuts East to West through this sector, with the ghosts of old motels standing beside the empty accommodations as you drive past nearby on I-70. A trip down Rt. 40 will uncover a few motels still operating, and the proprietors will tell you a tale or two about odd happenings of yesteryear and today associated with the highway.
My favorite portion of this road stretches from Springfield to Engelwood, rolling through aviation history that includes the gremlins first descried by WWII crews and the aliens said to be housed since 1943 at what was once old Wright Field. The Wrights taught us to fly, to reach the moon, and to yearn for alien contact. Many people maintain that they succeeded in all three. At Wright Patterson Air Force Base, a portion of the tour is conducted away form the museum and reached only by special vehicle and only after one has registered for that tour and revealed a valid Identification Card. Records of daily visitors are kept long-term. It is somewhere near this regulated tour site that the extraterrestrials from the Roswell UFO crash site are believed to be housed. Black and white photos of the aliens are circulated among the Air Force crews in that area, but the only one I have seen is third or fourth generation copy of one photo. It was too fuzzy to be believable.
At age 11, my class was deep into a science unit about the UFO Phenomenon that has swept the country during the early Cold War years at the end of World War II through the 1970s. My assignment was to write to Major Donald E. Keyhoe, a principal in Project Blue Book, operated by the United States Air Force. More about my true experience is found at UFOS and Me. For a complete library of accumulated information on UFOs and government interventions around the world since the 1940s, please visit TheBlackVault.com. Under The Freedom of Information Act, the webmaster began requesting information as a teenager and today has a prolific website complete with Radio and TV broadcasts. The Black Vault has been completely refreshed in design and relaunched in April 2009 and is a masterpiece as well as major reference source in the Paranormal and Government Conspiracy communities. It includes information about many events besides UFOs.
Deep into finding and tracking UFOs and abductees, Commander Keyhoe wrote back to me quickly and indicated that he would like to hear about any UFOs we witnessed in our studies. We had not seen any, but he seemed to be hoping that we would.
The largest and most comprehensive Project Blue Book report was Special Report Number 14. It was prepared after the work teams at government contractor Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio analyzed the project information with their current technologies and computer models. Today, Battelle works around the world, with laboratories between Columbus and Springfield, where research and development includes offense and defense associated with biological warfare, green technologiers, alternative energies, and other projects.
Interestingly, Donald Keyhoe had first been a science fiction writer before joining the US Marine Corps. One of his early stores was published in Weird Tales, 1926 and called Through the Vortex, reminding me of the central third of Ohio.
Keyhoe Censored
Back in January of 1958, Major Keyhoe agreed to be interviewed on television by CBS, live and without a script. He was shown on the Armstrong Circle Theatre and spoke about UFOs, contactees, and the like. The Major maintained that a US Congressional Committee was currently examining and evaluating dtata that would show that UFOs are under intelligent control.
Officials of CBS cut the audio feed from that live broadcast, with the rationale being required "security clearance."
The general public was not to be made aware of certain date, under orders of the US Federal Government. We still do not know what that is. However, in March of 1958, Keyhoe told it all on ABC to Mike Wallace and was uncensored.
Are aliens, as in Men in Black, housed at Wright-Patterson AFB? Are their alien corpses stored in formaldehyde in a hangar or rubber manneguins in a storage closet? Or have global governments simply been formulating spacecraft since HG Wells's science fiction days? -- That's what Wernher von Braun really wanted, instead of rockets and bombs. Meanwhile, in a NASA installation in Northern Ohio, researchers practice on developing teleportation. The missions of the several smaller NASA and contractor installations I have run across throughout the state is unknown. It all points back to WPAFB.

A Wild Ride
$195 Million Awarded to WPAFB in 2009
WAFB, Wright State University, and University of Dayton look at alternative training methods for military service personnel. Dr. E. Eveland (background in shot to the right) with the 711th Human Performance Wing, examines an airman on a specialized treadmill. The airman is attached to instruments that measure aerobic capacity. Nontraditional training methods will improve warfighter performance (a new entity).
WPAFB has been granted $194.5 Million for a new 711th Human Performance Wing complex. The complex will further research and develop advanced warfare technologies, likely to include biotechnologies.
Ex-military personnel, researchers, futurists, authors, and conspiracy theorists have suggested that Project Blue Book closed so instantly in 1969 (actually 1970) related to the fact that the USAF and the federal administration had been experimenting with alien technologies and biologies attained in Roswell, New Mexico - and elsewhere - in order to increase American supremacy in the world. Some point to the upsurge in 711th Human Performance Wing activities as the culmination of these studies.
Some historians and social scientists believe that the UFO Phenomenon was an entity that united people during the Cold War and staved off the willingness of superpowers to use nuclear bombs against one another. Others point to it as an orchestrated distraction perpetrated by the American government to attract the attention of the population and the media so that clandestine federal activities would not be ferreted out. The answer may be at WPAFB.

Really! It's not just me that thinks so, then. Good to know. Truly, some days I think it is another dimension.
I didn't know anything about this. I lived and worked in Dayton, OH for a few years and even go back periodically to visit the air force museum there. I have no doubt that one day we will have contact with "aliens", I kind of hope I'm not around for it. It's hard to imagine it won't be completely "unaggressive" although I guess there's no reason for them to delay if they really want anything from us.
How about that? The alien photos resurface a couple or so times a decade. It's all very interesting.
Interesting. Thank you for answering my request! :o)
Thanks! I'd really like to read some more stories from other Hubbers for your request.
My family is from Columbus, and my son and I are planning a road trip east, passing through there. Should we be worried about being abducted? :)
Not by UFO aliens, most likely! You might be approached by the homeless population, but they won't abduct you :) - they just want a sandwich.
Fascinating. Hmmm. This would make for a good conversation over dinner. What an interesting phenomenon. Glad I came across this.
Patty , maybe that's where my daddy is the s.o.b. And mum told me he ran away to join the circus. I'm gonna find him one day. :-)
Did that whole Roswel incident really happen, or was it just Hollywood?
bunyip named sue! - Just as in the story in Sarah Pritchard's collection "Lately." Ran away with the circus and started a new family, no less. Try Cirque du Badgers!
cindyvine - Some sort of energy mishap ocurred, evidenced by the existence of medical cases of persons nearby that incident and other similar incidents (1950s-1960s) that suffered radiation burns if close by and radiation sickness (ala Hiroshima) if further away. It may all be govt research vehicles rather than aliens, but some energy mishaps did occur. Underground nuclear testing later on in the West and Southwest added to the confusion and intrigue.
ms Patty , you sure are a sweetheart, I'm on my way to that Circus place you said. sayonara !
Many happy circus memories to you bunyip, and good hunting!
Great hub! I happen to live in the "corridor" and there are weird happenings here (usually in the more rural areas). Just this past winter my family and I watched these very odd planes (or whatever) that moved very quickly and then they would stop and then they would fly up and down. I have also heard about Wright Patterson housing (or used to) alien beings and that it is the true "Roswell." I guess we will never know for sure until "they" get here. I am always interested in UFOs and the unknown - I mean, really, we cannot possibly be the only "intelligent" beings in existence (or else that's a little bit disturbing)! :)
I have a really convincing proof that aliens exist, see my hub regarding that topic for same, will not post link here ....
If you know someone moving to a new assignment at WPAFB, we would love to help them find their new home in the area.
Super hub. I was waiting for you to mention the strange case of Philip Schneider. Funny, when I put his info on my hub 'UFO, No' I lost my google place in space.

I and several friends have ancestors who lived in the "Corridor". Always thought they were a little weirder than average. Have a good idea why now. Thanks!
