Angular Stomatitis: Its Causes

Pain and social awkwardness are among the two of the least favorite things of any person. These are the things that a person with angular stomatitis is experiencing, and when an angular stomatitis attack happens, it is imperative that it should be remedied as soon as possible. Angular stomatitis can be the catalyst to these two least favorite things.

As a backgrounder, angular stomatitis are lesions or cracks or fissures on the mouth area that are caused either by weather conditions, bacterial entities, fungal entities, vitamin deficiencies, iron deficiencies, immune system deficiencies, or ill-fitting dentures. To be able to seek the proper treatment for it, the root cause should, of course, be determined first. What are the usual treatment options for it? This hubpage will be discussing these things so read on.

Angular Stomatitis: Treatment Options

Angular stomatitis, also known as perleche, angular cheilitis, and angular cheilosis, can become really painful, to the point of bleeding and accumulating pus if not given any treatments. Not only that, it can also affect one's social activities, even to the point of other people thinking that it is caused by a venereal disease if they do not know better. The mouth sores can get so embarrassing to the point of an individual suffering from it to shy away from the public, gearing the way towards a lonely existence that would not do anybody any good.

In order for angular stomatitis to go away, as early as its first manifestation, treatment should already be sought. Fortunately, it is not that hard to treat and it is in no way life threatening. As a first aid, using lip balms are a great way to stop the pain. Avoiding licking the lips and the mout area would also help to not spread the fungi or the bacteria further into the recesses of the body, which might cause further harm.

Before doing anything about it, though, consult a doctor so that you will be able to get the right advice as to which type of treatment you should go for. Not all people have the same reactions to treatment so it is very important that you go for a treatment that you would respond greatly to. Doctors would usually prescribe topical cream solutions, like nystatin, econazole, and clotrimazole. Improvements in terms of having the fissures or cracks minimized will normally be seen after a few days of application of these solutions and, of course, the results would vary from individual to individual.

Topical steroids like triamcinolone, mycostatin, hydrocortisone, and iodoquinol are also being used. They are usually prescribed with the anti-fungal topical creams mentioned earlier. Again, ingesting these creams should be avoided.

If the angular stomatitis becomes more persistent, doctors may also recommend taking oral medicines. These pills are usually of a strong nature so it should be taken with a full stomach.

Other home remedies like olive oil, unsalted butter, aloe vera gel, and cucumber slices applied on the affected areas are also known to be effective. If symptoms persist, though, you should go ahead and ask for a second opinion.
