What are Coffee K-Cups?

K Cup coffee is a specially designed coffee container (cup) for the Keurig one cup coffee maker. K Cup coffee comes in small pods that are packed to stay fresh, and moisture free by vacuum packing the pods with ground coffee. The container is plastic, with a paper filter wrapped around the coffee and the cup has a foil seal that is easily puctured so water can be injected into the cup. Once the capsule is placed in the coffee maker, the foil lid is punctured several times with small holes. The bottom, or plastic part has fewer, but larger holes to provide space for the injected pressurized hot water to flow through the cup. Each cup creates a single serving of delicious hot coffee.

Coffee K cups are just one type of drink available for the Keurig maker. There are specialty flavors like

  • espresso
  • regular coffee
  • decaffeinated
  • various tea types
  • hot chocolate

All are available in K-Cups. Packages of cups are available in various quantities, but each package will consist of a number of pods between 108 count boxes and a couple dozen.  K-Cups make a great cup of coffee.  It doesn't matter if you are filling a mug in your house or a travel coffee mug with coffee, it will taste great!

Wonderful Makers of K-Cup Coffee by Specialty Brands

Besides all of the different flavors of K-cup coffee, there are also many high quality brands that produce the specialty pods. One of my personal favorites is Tullys. I recommend the french roast cups. Bold, flavorful and delicious.

Several other brands make coffee K-Cups including Bellacino, Caribou Coffee, Diedrich Coffee, Coffee People, Emeril's, Gloria Jean's, Timothy's and Van Houtte. All of these coffees can be found on the Keurig K Cups website, but, to buy them at the best price, Costco K-Cups, are available through the website. Most cups are under fifty cents each, but of course you buy them in bulk where most packages that are available have 108 cups in them. I don't think there is a Kirkland brand K Cup available yet, but Costco has been known to partner with quality manufacturers to produce a slight variant of a product under the Kirkland Signature brand, that is usually a great product at a great price.

Green Mountain Roasters also partners with Keurig to license it's technology, not only to supply cups, but to also make a single cup coffee maker. However, after looking at the Green Mountain site, it appears as if they just resell Keurig coffee makers. However, they do an excellent job of explaining how the cups and coffee maker work.

UPDATE: According to Wikipedia, Keurig is a subsidiary of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. It appears as if they run them as separate brands without co-branding the machines.

This extra bold espresso comes in a case of two boxes, with a total of 50 K cup servings. The beans are an especially high grade, and 100% certified Kosher. This is a very strong flavored coffee that is rich in flavor with very little bite, but I wouldn't call it real smooth. It does have a sweetness that can ease a sugar craving. All K cup coffee comes in single serving packages which is one of the benefits since it creates little mess. It comes from Arabica coffee beans that are found all over the world and according to Amazon, the beans are roasted in Canada.

If variety is the spice of life, than these assorted flavored K cups may be just the ticket to bring some variety to your morning coffee. It's also a good way to try some different flavors without purchasing a ton of one kind. Gloria Jean's coffee variety pack comes with five flavors. * Swiss Chocolate Almond * French Vanilla Supreme * Hazelnut * Butter Toffee * Cappuccino I wasn't a huge fan of the butter toffee, but the rest were good for flavored coffee.

K Cups not just for coffee - Get Tea K Cups

The Keurig one cup coffee maker is capable of making tea as well. There are numerous types of tea availabe in the K - Cups capsule.

Brands of K-Cup Teas include Bigelow, Celestial Seasonings (Which makes my favorite tea - Sleepy Time Tea), Timothy's Tea, and Twinings Tea. The tea can be ordered in variety packs. If you don't care about the brand, you can also find black, green, white, herbal, chai and decaf teas in coffee K-Cups.

Delicious Hot Chocolate K Cups - Everyone loves Cocoa

I love a good cup of cocoa and so do my kids. My only complaint about the pre packaged hot chocolate K cup is that they are a little too sweet for me. I prefer my hot cocoa less chocolately. However, if you like a rich cup of hot chocolate, then you will love the pods.

Where can I get Starbucks K cups?

As far as I can tell, Starbucks K cups that are pre-packaged do not exist. What you can do is buy Starbucks coffee beans and then pack a reusable K cup.

Save the environment! Resuable K Cups

The Keurig resuable K cup coffee filter (My K Cup) allows you to use your favorite beans, or anything else you want to try. However, it only works with certain models, so be sure your coffee maker supports it. The nice thing is, once you're done, you just rinse out the cup, then use it again.

Disposing of a K Cup

One of the big benefits, is the ability to clean up quickly after making a cup of coffee. Commercial Keurig One Cup Coffee Makers come with a large reservoir that will hold many used coffee K cup pods. Before a new K cup is inserted, the used cup is dropped into the reservoir. Once a day, the the reservoir can be emptied and easily wiped clean. You want to empty the used K cups frequently because they can dry and stain the machine. Plus, it's a bit gross to have old coffee grounds sitting in the bottom. I'm not sure if this is a health risk, but it's better to clean it.

How Long do K Cups Last

If you are going to stock up on K Cups because you found a discount and think they are too cheap to pass up, you want to be careful not to buy to many. K Cups typically last about six months. So, you want to limit your supply to make sure that you use them before they go stale. If you are single, you most likely will use one to two K cups per day which means you will use 30 to 60 K Cups per month. If you're going to buy a six month supply, don't buy more than 360 K Cups for coffee or tea.

Creating the Perfect Foam for a K Cup Latte or Cappuccino

Nespresso Le Cube Espresso Machine Plus Milk Frother Nespresso Le Cube Espresso Machine Plus Milk Frother
The Nespresso is very similar to the Keurig Single cup coffee maker. It uses pods and makes a very good and consistent shot of espresso. But my favorite accessory is the Nespresso Aeroccino that makes the perfect foam for a cappuccino and milk for a latte. It has two internal attachments that spin and either create foam or stir the milk while it heats to the perfect temperature. The Aeroccino is so good, you can buy it separately and use it to make foam for your Keurig K Cup coffee.

How does this compare to the Nespresso cappucino machine by Nestle? I love single serving coffee because I'm a bachelor and a whole pot of coffee often goes to waste. This sounds like a great solution for a single person. Another reason I like it is because it saves water. And let's be honest, in San Francisco, everyone is going green.

This type of coffee maker is great for sinngle people.  One reason I really like it for me and my wife is that there is little waiste.  Each pod makes a single cup.  Occasionally, you'll get a bad pod, but that's about all the waiste there is.  The other think I really like about the single cup coffee makers with pods is that each person can easily have a different type of coffee.  This was great when my wife was pregnant and she wanted decaf.  We switch back and forth between drip coffee and the pods.  I started getting headaches just to find out that she had switched us to drip decaf.  So I want back on the pods.  Now that she isn't pregnant, we drink regular drip in the morning and mostly single cups in the evening.

I'll do another Hub on the Nespresso. It's very nice, but I think the capsules are more expensive.

Is it faster too? Steph, the love of my life, takes a lot of time making coffee in the morning. Maybe this is faster?

It's very fast and the quality is good. The coffee snob may stick up their nose at it, but It's much faster than grinding beans and trying to make the killer shot of espresso or brewing a pot of coffee.

I met my first Keurig a little over a week ago while visiting my sister...and once I'd mastered it's use, I was in love with it. This started a coffee maker debate though as my brother swore by his new Senseo and the ability to make his own coffee pods...plus he liked the frothiness of the beverage made by his Senseo.

I'm still not convinced that pod coffee is for me yet...still weighing the cost of pods and amount of waste generated by those little cups vs having to make a full pot of coffee at a time (even though none of it is ever wasted). I supposed until my current machine dies...I won't worry about making that choice :)

Thanks for some more information on this coffee maker and the pods though. Great hub!

One thing I've been really enjoying about the K cups is when we have guests over. Each guest can easily have a cup of decaffeinated or regular coffee. Also, when compared to a pot, it feels like there is a lot less waste.

My K-Cup reusable filters are a great to save money. With all the craziness on Wall Street, and people feeling more frugal, making your own pods is a good idea. Although, there are a few reports that they make a little mess, so it's a good idea to have paper towels handy to wipe up any drips.

Coffee K Cups are great for people that live alone because the single serving size is perfect. I'd consider it a great gift idea for two people, where one likes decaf and the other likes regular coffee. It's also great for parties where everyone wants a custom drink.

So that means if I am drink 4 cups of coffee a day. I am using 4 of them k cups? That is wasteful and not worth the cost.

Paul Edmondson profile image

Paul Edmondson  says:

@Kat, It depends. If you make an 8 cup pot of coffee and don't drink it all, that may be more wasteful than using four pods a day. You can also buy the the resuable pods and fill them with your own coffee to save a bit.

Nestle K cups do not exist as far as I can tell. You can get the hot chocolate in packets, but you can't buy k cups.

If you are looking where to buy k cups. Costco. That's the best place for the price and to get bulk k cups for the office or if you are a heavy coffee drinker.

Ashley  says:

The best place to get K-cups is Bed Bath and Beyond. Use one of the big blue 20% off coupons they mail out and get a $9.99 box of 18 K-cups for $7.99. If you want to buy several different kinds, this is a great deal- with a coupon for each box of 18, it adds up to the same price per K-cup as Costco's big boxes. You can sign up to receive BB&B coupons in their stores. They also mail out $5 off $15 purchase and $10 off a $30 purchase coupons which are also great for buying K-cups!

Paul Edmondson profile image

Paul Edmondson  says:

Thanks for the Bed Bath and Beyond Tip. I have that coupon. How is BBB K cup selection?

Ashley  says:

BB&B carries 25 different kinds of coffee in many different brands, Green Mountain hot chocolate, Celestial Seasonings English breakfast tea, and Bigelow organic green tea. If you want to see their full selection, check out their website: www.bedbathandbeyond.com, and type "Keurig cup" into their search area.

I am interested in the reusable K-cup idea. Where do you buy the materials for it? Also, does the coffee with the reusable filter taste as good as the the kind made with K-cups? And, has anyone tried putting tea leaves in the reusable filter? I am trying to figure out the best less expensive way to enjoy my Keurig. I mainly use it for coffee and tea, but also occasionally enjoy the hot chocolate.

Tea works in the reusable filters. Amazon has them for about $15.

I was curious about the K-Kaps so I ordered two. They were easy to use (Remove the top from the k-kup, empty the used coffee, rinse and let dry. Next you fill the cup with your own finely ground coffee and put the K-Kap on.) I'm satisfied with the purchase. I like my coffee strong, so I was able to add a bit more to the cup. I have found that using the large cup option on the Keurig makes a weak cup of coffee. So far my favorite brand is Newman's Own.
