What is Colocation?

If your business has no previous experience with technical or IT infrastructure operations, handling the administration tasks of one or multiple web servers can be a daunting and time-consuming responsibility. It can be even more difficult for your company to manage your web servers if your technical support team is not experienced with managing the servers from a remote location. This is important for any business, and in the case where yours is undereducated or improperly trained, you can take advantage of colocation. When they want access to the same features and benefits of the larger companies, smaller companies often face a problem with server hosting. As a small company, most are not able to afford the cost of hiring a full IT team to manage their servers nor can they afford all the equipment that is needed to support their own web hosting. When this issue arises, as it often does, collocation can be the answer.

If you will be using colocation services to house your web server, then you will need to know what kind of equipment they are able to store, and you also need to be sure that they can properly support it. Most colocation data centers offers space in metrics of rack units. There are many colocation data centers that place a limit on the cases of the machines they will house to be maximize the efficiency of their space consumption. Typically, the lower costing web servers are designed to fit tower cases, so be aware of this when buying your web servers and try to get your servers pre-built to be rack mountable. This will save you a lot of money over the long term.  Colocation allows the company to have and own its personal dedicated server but they don't have to keep up the costs of managing the server themselves. The web server is housed in someone else's data center, usually a professional IT company, and their bandwidth is at your disposal. You are in a sense purchasing a plot of real estate to be the home for your server. The benefits of colocation are numerous and include having access to the data center's power sources, use of the network, and many other services that are often needed to host and maintain a web server.

How It Works

Once you have your web server functioning the way you want it, you simply deliver it or have it delivered to the colocation data center and you get your web server established on the premises they have setup there. The data centre company will give you an IP address and they will also supply the bandwidth. You will still have direct access to your web server, just as you would with dedicated hosting, via a server control panel. The only difference will be that you own the server but you're just not taking care of it.

Benefits of Colocation

An advantage that you get with colocation is that since you maintain ownership of the web server, you can make changes as you see fit without the prior approval of anyone else. If you feel your web server is running to slow, then you can make alterations to change that. Should you decide that the web server needs a memory upgrade, then you can do it, or rather, have it done. You can upgrade your server as much as you want and whenever you want because you are the supplier. You also maintain full control of the software applications that are installed, so if you want to add something, you can do that, too.  With colocation, you can be assured that you will be getting quality service, as long as you choose a quality provider. Such tasks as server system administration, which includes OS and applications updates, and the network and system security are two areas that require monitoring constantly. You should be sure that your colocation provider has staff that has been sufficiently trained to handle these tasks as a certain degree of technical knowledge is required in order to keep things running smoothly.

Finding a Colocation Provider

Colocation is very cost effective where it is needed. It costs less than keeping the web server at your own location and then installing it, setting up networking, and everything else that is necessary to be your own web host. Additionally, by taking advantage of colocation, you will have access to more bandwidth than what you would be able to get on your own. This is something that is very important to small companies, as buying bandwidth direct can break your entire budget. You will find that most colocation providers will require you to have some kind of contract with them. Be careful of this, as it can be a downside for you if they offer a low quality of service. If you decide that you need better services, you will pay heavily to break the contract. You need to be sure that you have studied and fully understand what you are getting into before you sign the contract, so read and reread so that you are fully aware of every detail. You need to look for items such as the Service Level Agreement, commonly abbreviated SLA, as this component of the contract states that the colocation provider must and will maintain their services at a satisfactory level. There should also be some type of guarantee of your web server's uptime, which is usually about 99.9%, and usually they will offer reassurance of support responses of no more than about 2 hours. If there is any part of the colocation contract that makes you feel uncomfortable, then you should seek out another provider.

No matter where your company is located, your web server will remain housed at the colocation data center that you chose. It will still be functioning just the same as before, and it will be up and running all the time. You don't have to worry about the security of your web server either, as colocation data centers will keep the server in a protected room and it will be monitored by their staff and via camera surveillance. So, your business can carry on its daily operations. Despite the high overhead that is required in the form of maintenance and security, colocation services usually cost about $100 or less per month. Keep in mind that this can vary depending on the costs associated with the uplink provider, and depending on just how much you require of the colocation provider. If you don't have the experience or expertise to manage your own web server and properly maintain it, then colocation is probably the best choice for you.
