Flash fiction is a form of short story writing that is very tight and very concise. It pulls the reader in with the barest amount of fluff and lives or dies in the space of 250-1,000 words(though there is no universally accepted word count to define flash fiction itself). Below is a beginners list of links for Flash Fiction, everything from the history of the genre to "how to" guides.

The term Flash Fiction likely originated in Tom Hazuka, James Thomas, and Denise Thomas's 1992 anthology of that name. Also known as sudden fiction, micro-fiction, the micro story and the short-short story, it's a genre thats experienced recent popularity thanks in part to the internet and its demand for pointed content. Flash fiction is by no means a new form of writing. In fact parallels and roots can be drawn all the way back to Aesop's Fables.

Types of flash fiction can be defined by a stories specific word-count. A DRABBLE is a story of exactly 100 words, while a 69er is a story with precisely 69 words (excluding titles). Nano-fiction is characterized as a complete story with at least one character and a distinguishable plot.

Extreme example of Flash Fiction:

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn." -Hemmingway

I'm a big fan of Flash Fiction; it's a great format with which to develop editing skills and a high content to filler ratio in your writing. If you can learn to write complete stories in 600 words, you can apply that knowledge to write War and Peace depth epics in 300 page novels, at least in theory.

Thanks for the explanation. I always wondered what that was.
