Organic Gardening

Organic gardening is not different from regular gardening, except it does not involve the usage of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. This aspect makes it a form of gardening in which one has to pay a lot of attention to the needs of the plants as there is not help of pesticides to help and fight diseases and insects. Therefore awareness of a plants needs and its requirements is imperative.

The soil plays a very important part in organic gardening, organic material needs to be added to the soil to keep it productive and in good condition for the plants to be grown in. it is in fact an essential source of healthiness for a plant that has been grown organically. Organic material also known as compost can be made from dead leaves, flowers, vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, manure, grass clippings and many other things. A perfect soil is one which has a dark color, smells sweet and is full of earth worms. Soils might sometimes need natural additives that are not found in compost such as bone meal, rock phosphates or greensand. A perfect soil will give a balanced pH and this can be found out by a simple pH test, which will also clarify what nutrients need to be used.

The major concern gardeners have about organic gardening is the usage of pesticides on their plants. As they cannot use pesticides it is always better to take measures to prevent the plants from various insects that may cause the plant harm. Plants that are kept in normal conditions that are neither too wet nor too dry are usually safe from insect attacks; also healthy plants do not attract insects and are able to fight any harm inflicted upon them by the insects. If a number of plants are grown then it is possible that pests will not be much of a problem, so it is advisable to grow a variety of plants in a garden.

The best way to defend against insects is to nurture insect eaters such as frogs or lizards; this can be done by growing colorful flowers that attract nectar sucking insects, or by keeping a water source in the garden. Household items such as insecticidal soaps, garlic and hot pepper can also be used. Also sticky traps, barriers and plant collars may also prove to be beneficial.

In order to avoid plant diseases, disease resistant plants can be grown in their prime conditions. Also too much moisture or a constant supply of moisture is often a reason for plant diseases, thus the air circulation and water content if monitored can help prevent many unwanted plant diseases.

Perhaps one of the most annoying aspects of organic gardening is the weeds. In order to combat the weed problem Organic mulch can be used, to strengthen this protection a layer of cardboard or newspaper can be put under the mulch. Solarization and corn meal glutens also help in reducing the growth of the weeds. The art of hoeing and pulling is also a very useful and old technique to curb the growth of weeds and if done for a few seasons the weed problem almost vanishes for good!

Organic Garden even though is a time consuming process but once gardeners get the details sorted out and adapt little techniques to make it faster it is one of the healthiest ways to cultivate and grow plants!

A Greenhouse Will Get You Going

If you’re somebody who loves to do gardening but lives in an area with a short growing season then a hobby greenhouse is the key to your problem, it will help you grow plants all year long without having to wait for specific seasons. A hobby greenhouse, like the name suggests is meant for those who seek the pleasures of gardening, not for those who wish to grow flowers and vegetables on commercial basis, however a tomato plant and a few greens can be grown if you’re in the right environment. Green House enthusiasts have their own organization known as the Hobby Greenhouse Association, they help in sponsoring different events and in helping individuals nurture their interest in gardening by providing help, and they also publish a quarterly magazine.

If you’re looking for a hobby greenhouse in the market several are available, the smallest type is the size of a phone booth and is not big enough to be walked in, and is accessed from outside. Made out of glass so that maximum light can penetrate through, to the plants, it is made to accommodate a large number of plants as it has a number of shelves. Another Hobby Greenhouse of the small type, but less expensive, is the one that has shelving covered with a zippered tent of clear plastic, this type of Hobby Greenhouse is ideal for a small scale hobby gardener who wants to keep her house plants and flowers in a safe place.

For those enthusiasts whose interest in gardening leads them to grow plants on a larger scale, spacious Hobby Green Houses are also available in the market, these are larger in size and it is possible to walk in them unlike the smaller Hobby Green Houses. They are made out of glass or plastic and are roughly the size of a small storage building. They are being sold locally by some independent builders. Solar Prism is one of the national brands that stands out in terms of quality. It gets its name from its unique design. It is made up of a single piece of durable glass which is designed to work like tiny prisms side by side. They work in a special mechanism through which they trap the rays of the sun and reflect them back at the greenhouse at various different angles, when the weather is cloudy the greenhouse is said to glow for the same reason.

More advanced hobby greenhouses have automatic sensors which allow ventilation of air in the greenhouse and hence maintain the internal temperature of the hobby greenhouse which is adequate for the plants. Though these are savers of labor but they can be quite expensive, built in irrigation systems and misting systems are also found in more advanced greenhouses, Another benefit sometimes found in nicer greenhouses is a built in irrigation or misting system. The Hobby Greenhouse Association has invented many unique designs of Hobby Greenhouses which shows their interest in the designs.

For all those who have interest in gardening greenhouse growing will help you. With the help of a greenhouse, you can grow and get the earliest tomatoes and eat fresh salad greens all year long. Seedlings that would die at normal temperature if grown out of season can be grown in greenhouses; it is all in all a smart investment.
