Jugs make adorable, loving companions and are great little family dogs with huge personalities. Find out more about them here.
What are Jugs?
A Jug is a cross between a Jack Russell and a Pug, so is not a purebred dog but a hybrid of the two breeds. They are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club and generally make wonderful family pets.
Temperament
Being individuals, with a mix of both Jack Russell and Pug characteristics, each Jug will have its own unique personality. You should expect some of the fearless Jack Russell qualities, with a need for lots of exercising and sometimes an obsession with digging. Some Jugs, like the Jack Russell breed, are very dominant and may suffer from ‘little dog syndrome’ where they feel that they are dominant over all other dogs (and humans for that matter). It is wise to instill in them the knowledge that you are the leader of the pack from a very early age. Typical Pug-like qualities you may notice in your Jug are sensitivity and a tendency to become jealous of other dogs (and children) in the home. An ideal combination of the two breeds will give you a Jug who has a fearless and protective nature, yet is highly sociable and easy to train due to the high intelligence of both breeds.
Appearance
Jugs, depending on their ‘mix’ percentages, tend to have puggish type faces that are flatter than normal Jack Russells, with pug-like ears and a short snout. They may have leaner Jack Russell type bodies and will usually carry a curly pug tail. Coloring varies (depending on the parents) but the most typical jugs are either various shades of caramel or black. They are very endearing to look at and their cuteness and charm always guarantees a good deal of attention when walking them.
Size
Jugs usually grow to between ten to fourteen inches in height and can weigh anywhere between ten to eighteen pounds (again depending on the ratio of crossbreeding and the size of the parents).
Life Expectancy
Jugs are generally very sturdy and healthy little dogs and will live between fourteen and twenty years if fed a healthy diet and exercised daily.

Thanks for your comments Donna. Our Jug, Penny, is nine months old and is just the same; completely adorable and into everything and everybody. Warmest wishes, Sarah
ur dog is really cut i want to get one
we have a year old jug and every day she amazes me more!!My husband swears she understands english because of how smart she is and she learns everything we teach her literally after only a few times of showing her how.Every day I thank god for her because she is an amazing beautiful dog I absolutely recomend jugs to everyone I talk to because they are so smart and so loving and caring I am incredibly happy with our beautiful little Bella.
I have a jug. It's SOO cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My brother just got a Jug, it's a girl name LILLY.... She is so sweat!
I have an adorable 4 month Jug. She is being very hard to train. She rips everything apart, a destroyed my daughter's mattress, and a few other things. She is very loving though. I believe she has more Jack Russell in her than Pug. She is very smart and usually takes commands well. She just had her first puppy education class and had everyone fulled into believing she is an angel. I also have a male 8 month old Pug and he is excellent.
My husband and I adopted a 4-month-old jug (hybrid between a pug and a jack Russell terrier) and we named him Zorro. He is very playful and energetic but he also loves to cuddle. He is very smart and in less than 2 weeks he was potty trained. Zorro is adorable and always gets a lot of attention when we take him out. Thank you www.amishpups.com for all of you help. We could not be happier with Zorro.
we just got our JUg today.. he is 9 weeks old... Im hoping
to have many years of enjoyment with him... he is adorable.
we named him andy...
We just got our Jug today also and she is 11 weeks old. She has been a doll baby and has done well with our other dogs. She too is a cuddle buddy and wants to sit on our laps. I am looking forward to many years with her!
I enjoyed your blog about JUGS, seems like you are very familiar with them.I just givn two of the most adorable JUGS. They are pretty good but having two is difficult o train. Its like having two rambunctious toddler boys on overdrive at times.LOL Hwever, I was hoping you may be able to give me some additional advice or point me in te right direction? I love my boys to death, They listen (ok, most of the tie) to me as I am the Alpha leader. But they tend to egg one another on. The one that resembles the pug more also has the personality of one, calmer, not as active, down to earth, walks great alongside, listen better. The Jack Russell terrier look alike take on the JRT personality, very high strong and needs to run more, does not listen well, takes him longer to learn, seems a bit like he has ADHD basically. How can I get them on an even pace? Is it possible? They suffer extreme seperation anxiety, and when they aretogether they chew thrre walls, chairs, bags, whatever they can. Seperate they do same but you can hear them egging eachother on or something. I just want to do the best I can for my family and my little guys.
Dear Ivy, you are so right when you say that having two Jugs is like "having two toddler boys on overdrive!" I would suggest, in the first instance, you take a look at http://hubpages.com/hub/how-to-train-a-puppy-train - it's a wonderfully comprehensive hub on puppy training and covers all aspects of early care. I wish you all the best and much happiness with your little sweethearts :-)
My Jug is 10 months old and he does not like cuddles anymore!!!!! he used to love sleeping on our laps but now needs his "space" and prefers to sleep on the floor at times than on the sofa with us!! has anyone else found this?? apart from that he is a little star, he is so funny and playful, he is good with children, very excitable all the time constantly wagging his tail!! Has the energy of a JRT but the attention seeking/sometimes jealous behaviour of a Pug but i would not change him for the world
my jug leart 3 tricks in 2 weeks
we love are jug dearly and hes always up to somthing
but how do we get him 2 stop biteing us?
he likes to be pamperd alot but wen he is on the mad 1/2 hr
he cant stop getting too exited
juggy xxx
Me and my girlfriend just got 2 Jug puppies and 9 weeks of age. One is a male and the other is a female. We named them Nellie And Yogi. They are just the cutest thing and get along great with eachother. They can never sleep unless their side by side to eachother or leaning their heads on my arm. The always want to be held and i find that so cute and fall right asleep as soon as they get on my lap. I havent started training them yet but i will soon i hope they are as smart as everyone says they are.

We have a jug, have her since she was 5 wks old....she's 1 1/2 now.....we LOVE her. She's the perfect mix, loves to play and sit on your lap ,even though she weighs about 25 lbs. She was a very fast learner. Our daughter received her as a birthday gift, but we all immediately fell in love with her. She thinks everyone & every dog is her friend.
