Some people don't file tax returns because they don't have enough money to pay their taxes. Interest and penalties compound on your tax liability, so it is growing fast. So what should you do to solve this IRS issue?

Not filing your tax returns is worse than filing them late and owing the IRS money. It's a felony if you do not file a tax return and you owe taxes but there's no criminal penalty if you file but cannot pay your taxes. If you continue to not file your taxes, you could be fined up to $25,000 a year or sentenced to a year in prison for each unfiled year.

The IRP or Information Returns Program is an efficient system used by the IRS to determine if you have filed a tax return.

Filing Your Return

  • Get all your papers together and ask for missing copies from the IRS.
  • Prepare your tax returns. Get a tax professional or do it on your own. If there is a need to actually deal with the IRS, a tax professional can do it for you and will be available to answer any inquiries about documents you might require.
  • Know of the time limits for tax refunds because you might actually receive it, regardless if from an unfiled tax return, and you can use it to pay for your tax liability.
  • To solve your IRS issues, negotiate an Offer in Compromise or installment agreement, or even pay your tax debts in full.
  • Research methods with a tax professional to avoid the same issues in the future and minimize your taxes.
