All My Gardens 2009 Updated July 5, 2009
63April of 2009
We have done alot of work on our gardens already. The raised areas and other areas of our gardens have been prepared and are waiting for us to plant things in them. Next month there will be even more to plant. May will be the month to seed vegetables and other plants. We are waiting for the herbs and tomato plants to arrive so that we can plant them in their cozy beds. Read the captions on the pictures to see what is in them.
Our neighbor is the manager of a landscaping company nearby. He brings us some plants every now and again. This year he has given us a small Pine Tree to plant and we are waiting until it is big enough to do so. It is really small now and for some reason every pine tree that we have planted in our yard has perished with three weeks. So I am letting this one get bigger and stronger before planting in the ground.
He has also given us some "unusuals". They are in the Hens and Chickens plant family. I put them beteween the New Strawberry garden and the ramp to our deck. I thought they wouldn't take there or that something would move or eat them. I am surprised that they are still there and it has been a few days!
The garden behind the tree we had to cut down has been a work in progress. We don't have the funds to get about four truckloads of good dirt to put in there so it is added a little each year. I was hoping that this would be my herb garden, but that may take a few years still. What Herbs I am getting as plants will be potted and maybe just sat in the potential herb garden.
Right now I just planted some Columbine "Winky" in there. They are many colors and I hope they survive there. They seemed fragile as I was planting them. We can only hope around here at what grows and what doesn't because it is different every year.
We are done planting for April.
April 18, 2009: I lied! I just seeded Salsa Peppers, Green Peppers, A row each of Spring Onions, Carrots and Radishes. When they come up then I will plant another row of each.
Come back about every two weeks and there will be new pictures and updates.
See you in May!

Today it is raining off and on. May 9, 2009 will be a Full Moon. I managed to get pictures before it rained again this morning. Everything is sprouting and growing strong.
I planted Stevia seeds, and some herbs as well in the last week. Most of those have sprouted with the exception of the Catmint and Lemon Balm.
Herbs that I have now are: Onion Chives and Celantro in pots already. Seeds I have planted: Stevia, Lemon Balm, Fennel, Cat Mint, and some cat grass out in the yard seeded with the Perennial Ryegrass. LOL what we mostly have is weeds! We live in the woods and I don't really care what it is as long as it is green and my hubby is happy to cut *his* grass.
I was very surprised that the Radishes have already sprouted. The only things that have not are the Carrots and Spring Onions.
So here are the pictures for you.....

Next year I will only have Tomatoes and Peppers. That is what I say right now.; This year the rain just about kiled the Squash, Cucumbers and Beans. I can't believe it! They didnt even get the chance to grow up the trellises. What a waste! We shall see.

Believe me, it is hard labor getting this rock and root ground built up. Where the Strawberry bed is, I dug for two weeks getting the driveway rock out of it and I still get it coming up. The dirt here is not that great, mostly clay. The top soil is crap! The trees have it so acidic, we limed the whole area two years in a row to get anything to grow.
Thanks for stopping by and letting me know your feelings.
You are definitely doing a lot of hard work! Hope you get a bumper crop out of what you plant this year.
Wow! You have so many garden beds. I just started my first vegetable garden. We will see how it goes. Maybe if I get the hang of it and my boys have fun we will add some more. What else do you grow?
Wow! You're going to have a lot of vegetables and flowers with all those beds. It's a lot of work, but well worth the effort.
Peggy, Jim and Christoph, Than you all for comming by and commenting.
This was the first year I have tried the cabbage family vegetables. I am not sure how they will do. When I put all the Vie crops, like Cucumbers, Squash, Snap Beans and Limas, I had many raised gardens to play with. When I moved my Strawberries to one area that gave me two more raised beds to play with. So I will plant Peppers, and some root crops that never really did much. The ground is softer now in the riased beds and better soil is in them so they may do well this year. It is all trial and error here. Some years we will get lots and others we won't. Last year we didn't get any tomatoes, but the year before we got lots. This year I replaced the dirt in the buckets where the tomatoes are going and we will see if the old dirt was just worn out.
I like to garden because I don't use any hormones to start or stop growth and I do not use any chemicals to keep bugs off. The netting does that for me and it is alo biodegradible. I can put it in the compost when it wont stay together anymore.
I have hanging pots on my back deck too, but it is hard to keep anything in them. There are these crows that will come and rip out any plants that I have in them out. They don't eat them, they just like to tear them out. I thought it was the squirrels, but was just watching out the french doors one summner day and saw the crows doing it. I was shocked!
Look like you have been working very hard - so many beds. Hoping that you have a bumper crop this year.
Know what you mean about the top-soil - we have clay soil and it is very poor. Sodden in the winter and like cement in the summer.
Sufidreamer, Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate it much!
The netting sounds like a great idea. My son came home with a cabbage plant last week. I guess the school has a contest in which whoever grows the largest cabbage will get a free computer. So he is quite excited about growing that cabbage. I will see how it goes.
Jim, Get some humus and some potting soil and mix them together and then plant your cabbage. When planting your cabbage digg about a foot more in diameter and a foot down into the ground, mix the soil mixture in that and then put your cabbage in it. Let it grow! It will be big! Let us know how it grows! I would like to hear if your son won and how big it did get.
Ohhhhh just looking at the work you have done has made me lie down : )
badcompany, I am still looking for a Mock Orange to put in the space between the house and the ramp to our deck. But for now, I am settling for the vegetables that I will be getting in a month or so. I will be busy!
Today is my birthday and guess what I am gong to get--more plants. Flowers for those extra two rasied gardens I have. I am going for annuals in those. Just something different and I HAVE to get Marigolds for my Husband. He loves those and they go in the pots around the deck where the table is.
Belated Happy Birthday, just give yerself a wee break ok : )
Grrrr b I had a good post and it didn't save it!!
Thanks for the belated Birthday wish.
I am taking a break this week or until my tomatoes and Herbs coem the first or second week of May. We have had a few days of summer here with the hot weather and temps being in the high 90's that things that normally take a week or two to sprout have done so already. The only things that haven't sprouted is the Green Beans, but I think they may have today because the temps are much cooler and we did get some rain last night.
I will be taking pictures this weekend and posting them.
It is May 1 and I have new pictures that I promised that I would have for you.
Your gardens are certainly different from mine - but interesting! I noticed that you commented on my Hub about the expense of bringing in real dirt. My soil is fairly poor - stony, chalky, thin layer of topsoil. I have worked on improving the soil with compost and also leaf mould - both free!
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, we have a compost bin but it has only been cooking for a little les than a year. Time is of the essence in my gardens and the vegetables gardens are new every year. We just got some Humus and have spread it out in the gardens. It's just goung to take alot of time here in our yard. We have roots, shale and clay to work with. It is frustrating sometimes. Our main garden tool we work with is the......Pick!!
More Pictures have been added. The garden around the picnic table area is partially finished. We are going to clean out under the grove of pine trees. We will continue with the boards around them and mulch the area. Then it is finished!!
I have already gotten a small harvest of Broccoli and put it in the freezer.
Wow my hubby and I live in a place right now, where we can only do a little bit. but, we do what little we can. We have some tomoatoes, some neat flowers, some beautiful arrangements, and a few beans, and pepper plants. It is fun, planting, and watching your efforts come to fruition!! Blessings, and wow, what nice gardens!!
rickyracer, We have been working at this for 4 years now. The herb garden or place were I want my herb garden is still in the works. The ground is hard and there are lots of roots from the many bige trees there. It will take another two years to get to a place where we can work in it. It's just alot of hard work.
Thanks for stopping by and leavng your comment.
Oh! great hub..I love to plant..best of luck for upcoming crop..
"plant more trees, n save them"
apeksha, Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment. I have trees all over the place. No need to plant more because there isn't room! LOL
Yes, We have tomatoes this year! One plant has a small tomato on it that is growing! Now I got to get the Peppers to grow and form them on their plants.
Updated July 5, 2009. I am dissapointed with my crops, and especially the weather which was most of the demise of my vine crops and peppers. Today it should be 95, but it is only 67 degrees. Peppers do not like the cold and this is cold to them! It was a strange garden this year.
