All Region DVD Player

All Region DVD Player

If you travel frequently or living in a country that is in a different region then you home country is from you might have need for an all region dvd player. I know this became an essential part of our home when I married someone who had family living in Japan. You see there are different standards for broadcasting. These fall into three main systems called NTSC, PAL and SECAM. It can get very technical quick if you go too deep into discussing the different systems. Essentially a DVD or TV broadcast originally coded for one system will not work on another system. So in our case if the DVD was originally made in Japan and meant for viewing there it would not play on our dvd player here in the US.

Why Does This Matter?

What Is A Region

The world has been broken down into 8 different regions and each of these regions has chosen there own broadcasting format.  90% of the world has bought into one of the big three mentioned above NTSC, PAL or SECAM.  A region is a large area that all broadcasts in the same format for example Region 1 is US, US territories and Canada.  Region 2 is Europe, Japan, The Middle East, and Egypt.  Again a DVD or even a VCR recording created in one region will not play in another region.

Why An All Region DVD Player

For most people this really doesn’t matter if they don’t travel much or do not have family or friends in another country who cares because everything they want to watch is all in one format.  In fact many people never even realize there are different regions or coding formats and it never makes a difference.  However, as stated above if you travel or like in our case have family or friends in another country and you want to watch DVD’s from that country you are going to have to buy a special all region DVD player or it is sometimes called a region free DVD player.  This was important to us as we wanted our kids to be able to watch TV, cartoons and DVD’s in Japanese and it was very hard to find these here in the States.  So we purchased a bunch of DVD’s one summer while back in Japan not even knowing about regions at the time.  We were really disappointed when we got home and none of them worked.

For these cases if you do purchase a region free player then you can watch the DVD from any region.  They often are not much more expensive and are no more difficult to set up or anything.  They work just like a regular DVD player.  In fact if you have one you will never notice any difference between it and any other dvd player.  However, you will be able to easily play DVD;s from any country or region which is nice.

Blu-ray offers a sharpness of detail, stability of color and depth of sound far beyond the capabilities of DVD. And yet that’s exactly why I’m wary of it.

Looks like a toy, performs like one too Review Remember those rugged plastic ‘singalong’ cassette players you could buy for pre-school children? The Aiptek MobileCinema D10 looks a projector version of the same kind of thing. Encased in tough, nursery-blue plastic, it is the least fragile projector we have ever tested, and the only one that required absolutely no warmup or setup whatsoever.…
