If you are just a simple guy or gal who is used to buying his or her coffee at a local grocer, then things are about to get a little heated. What I have to share with you today is the fact that there is a way to actually roast your own coffee so that you can start making your own customized coffee blends and flavors to complement your personality and taste. It may be just about time that you quit drinking generic canned coffee and start spreading your wings into a little bit of the finer things. The first thing that you may want to know is that pre-ground coffee is probably completely stale by the time that you purchase it. The cold hard facts are that when you freshly grind your own coffee beans, they will begin to go stale within two hours. The delightful aromas that you are smelling are actually the scent of the beginnings of your fresh grounds going stale. If you have a whole beans, then you must know that they will begin to go stale after about two weeks. So if you are buying pre-ground coffee for your coffee drinking pleasure, then that is in no way the best product you are going to get. Isn’t it time that you take matters into your own hands?

The roasting process of coffee in laymen’s terms is actually transforming the chemical and physical makeup of the coffee beans as you know it. You will be starting with green coffee beans because the brown color actually comes from the sugars that bubble out during the roasting process and cause a caramelization. Within the roasting process, you will be getting the characteristic flavor and taste of the coffee that you are so used to. A green coffee bean by itself does have a similar makeup as a roasted coffee bean, such as the acids, proteins, and caffeine content. The only difference is that it is without the rich and robust taste that we all crave as coffee drinkers and that comes from a professional and proper roasting process. If you are looking to improve the flavor profile of your coffee and up your standards as a coffee connoisseur, this is the road that you want to take.

Most people who are roasting their coffee like to follow a recipe, which is known as a “roast profile”, to bring out the specific taste and character that they want in their final product. The beans are then sorted into a hopper to remove excess debris and are roasted in either an indirect fire roaster or a direct fire roaster, the latter meaning that the beans will come in contact with a burner flame with the roasting process. At the end of the cycle the beans are cooled with a vacuum system which is preferred over are misting the beans with water to cool them since this causes immediate staleness in the beans themselves. If you are looking to open the door to home coffee roasting possibilities, then know that there are a wide variety of coffee roasters available to you to meet all of your specific needs. Just think of it as a creative outlet and control that you can have over your own coffee drinking by using your time to customize a new and complex coffee taste and flavor!
