All the Fuel-Saving Devices that do nothing but rip you off
89
Perpetual motion machines, fountains of youth, and fuel saving devices all fall into the same category: Opiate for the masses. They are all urban myths and legends with absolutely no basis in reality, yet countless thousands if not millions of motorists spend their hard earned money every year on a mind-boggling array of useless gadgets in the expectation that the hype is indeed true, and that this investment will pay off to minimize their ever expanding fuel budget. The bottom line is that none of these costly and over hyped devices do anything at all but rip off the unsuspecting motorist whether they ride a motorcycle, drive a car, an 18 wheeler or a tractor.
The U.S. E.P.A. (Environmental Protection Agency) has evaluated many of these devices and has come to the conclusion that most of them are not worth a plugged nickel. Absolutely none of them have shown to have any beneficial effects in fuel consumption and many of them can actually diminish performance, drop your MPG, and can even severely damage your engine and drivetrain components. Here are links to some of the EPA's findings for these various rip off devices:
ACDS Automotive Cylinder Deactivation System
AUTOTHERM (circulates coolant for heater)
Econo-Mist Vacuum Vapor Injection System
Emissions and Fuel Economy Effects of Vehicle Exhaust Emission Control Device
Gas Saving/Emission Control Improvement
Goodman Engine System, Model 1800
Hydro-Catalyst Pre-Combustion Catalyst System
Magna Flash Ignition Control System
Malpassi Filter King (fuel pressure)
Mesco Moisture Extraction System
Morse Constant Speed Accessory Drive
Paser Magnum/Paser 500/Paser 500 HEI
Pass Master Vehicle Air Conditioner
POLARION X (second evaluation)
SCATPAC Vacuum Vapor Induction System
Smith Power and Deceleration Governor
Super FUELMAX-Emission and Fuel Economy Report
Super FUELMAX-Fuel Economy and Emissions Data Analysis
Wickliff Polarizer (fuel line and air intake)
Needless to state, if you are considering spending your cash on any of these snake oil gadgets, you'd be far better off burning your dollar bills in your engine!

Nice hub. Very well done!
Spot on. i wrote a hubpage on the same subject before I saw your page.
I will finish the article anyway, as these crooks need pulling up.
Like to read one very angry reply to my hub on fuel savers being a load of.... ?
It links to your page, but I guess he did not look at that, He certainly did not offer any proof as you point out, the never do.
It is funny how deep people can hide their humanity to make a buck. This guy offers nothing to the discussion I know, but he sure adds some entetainment!
Yes, welcome to the echelons of HubBlasters, earnestshub! Heck, at least he did apologize at one point for being rude and he didn't threaten your life or genitalia, so you've been on the much milder end of the spectrum. They never offer any real proof as there isn't a single shred to support any of their wild eyed theories. All they're trying to do is make a buck by pushing useless junk and they get very irate when anyone points out that there is absolutely not one iota of factual basis behind their hysterical hype. I'd just reply to him: J`men tabarnak de toi! :)
g'day to you Hal. I wish I had your turn of words. Bloody funny!
I guess it was pretty mild. Geez these crooks get my goat. I posted a similar thread to my blog and copped a big serve off another one of these "Experts" the other week. He tried to belittle me, but I think both his brain cells clashed and it was pretty pathetic to see him claim that as his product had been on CNN he had positive proof. I don't know about you but I think the Australian comedy about CNNandNandN painted a fair picture of their idea of the truth.
The bozos at CNN who do "features" couldn't find their butts with both hands and a flashlight. A couple of months ago, I saw some fluff piece on some Southern yahoo good ol' boys who had this "mysterious" new technology that let their stock car run a zillion miles on eight drops of squirrel pee. CNN ran a three minute feature without ONCE asking how the damn thing worked, or looking under the hood, or having any rational automotive engineer comment on this. What a bunch of idiots!

Nice compilation, Hal! :) I have a link to EPA test summary page, but I did not know EPA published the results by individual device, too.
