I have always been curious about fat blockers, but I have never tried any because I was afraid it would not be good for my digestive system. It seems though, that the FDA has placed it's stamp of approval on a low dose version of the prescription drug Xenical called "alli."

GlaxoSmithKline on Tuesday May 23rd 2007, opened an educational exhibit in New York City to prepare the country for alli, the first over-the-counter diet pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and will be available for purchase mid June. In clinical trials, the FDA says that people using alli lost an additional 2 to 3 pounds for every 5 pounds lost through diet and exercise.

Alli (pronounced "al-eye") is the brand name that has been given to low-dose Xenical (orlistat.) Orlistat, which has been marketed in the United States as a prescription weight loss medication since 1999, works in your intestines where it blocks some of the fat you eat from being absorbed and digested. This undigested fat is then removed in your bowel movements. This is why the main side effect from using orlistat is "oily" stools, but this seems to be less of a problem with the reduced dosage, and reduced fat intake.

Since the FDA has approved this medication be sold without a prescription I will definately give it a try. I wonder though, that since the side effects of this medication are influenced by how much fat you consume, maybe that is why you will lose weight. You stop eating fatty foods for fear of oily stool accidents. Oh well, whatever works is okay with me.

alli - Not a Typical "Diet Pill"

alli only works on enzymes that break down fat, not on other enzymes. So carbohydrates and proteins are not affected. You still absorb those nutrients. But, since fat grams have more than twice as many calories as carbs and proteins, alli capsules work on the worst offenders - the calorie-dense fat grams.

alli is safe when used as directed - it works only in your digestive system, not in your heart or brain. That means you won't feel:

* jittery effects

* sleeplessness

* a racing heart

More On Side Effects

Because of the way in which alli works, eating meals with too much fat may cause side effects known as treatment effects. What are treatment effects?

alli™ works by preventing the absorption of some of the fat you eat. The fat passes out of your body, so you may have bowel changes. These are...

* gas with oily spotting

* loose stools

* more frequent stools that may be hard to control
