A highly popular musical instrument in the percussion family; the Timpani is essentially a type of drum which consists of a parchment or skin known as a ‘head' stretched over a massive bowl generally made of copper. The timpani is played by striking the head with a particular type of drum stick called a timpani stick or timpani mallet. Today, they are used mainly in musical concerts, marching, and even rock bands. Each drum is tuned to make a different note. However, modern timpani can modify notes on being hit with the help of a foot pedal. The sound is produced due to the vibration created by striking the drumhead with the timpani stick. The copper wall performs as a resonator.
It is possible to loosen or tighten the membrane stretched over the shell, as a result of which the pitch could be altered as required. The sound pitch depends upon the tension placed on the head by the hoop. As the tension increases, the pitch also rises. Two sticks are mainly used to strike the drums and stick types often range from soft to hard. Hard and soft beaters provide tonal variety. The timpanist has to know the precise spot where the membrane must be hit depending on the specific requirements of the piece. Certain commonly used positions include striking near the rim, on the rim and in the middle of the membrane. The Timpani is capable of producing different kinds of effects; often ranging from a low rumble to powerful drumbeats. The art of timpani playing is highly sophisticated, although it appears to be very simple.
Before purchasing an almost new timpani from ebay, always ensure that you are buying it from a seller of extremely good reputation. Never buy a used product from sellers who have only a few transactions to back their status and an immensely low positive feedback score. A highly reputable seller on ebay will have a significant number of feedback scores and percentage positive. Also do check if the product is covered by buyer's protection on ebay.
