Fat burners, appetite suppressants and thyroid supplements are quickly becoming the norm for many dieters, and many people suffering from an ‘underactive thyroid' are turning to over the counter products to help improve thyroid functioning. Are thyroid boosting pills really the answer for losing weight?

Alvidar is just one of the latest formulas available, a fat burner and thyroid booster that claims to increase the metabolism and keep the thyroid hormones in check. While the Alvidar website boasts several benefits of taking this all-natural pill, there is very little research available to support the claims. If you're considering taking Alvidar or other thyroid supplements, here's what you need to know:

Is the Thyroid Really the Problem?

Many diet pill companies and even diet books claim that weight gain is a result of an underactive thyroid, and that simply improving thyroid function can help melt away the pounds.

While many people with diagnosed underactive thyroids do encounter weight problems, a doctor must prescribe thyroid medication to manage the imbalance. The makers of Alvidar highlight the benefits of improving thyroid function, suggesting that regular supplementation will decrease depression symptoms, make weight loss easier, and even boost the metabolism.

The company claims that the thyroid is the culprit behind weight gain, but in most cases, weight gain is a result of a combination of health factors such as poor eating habits, poor stress management and a sedentary lifestyle. While some people do have a slow-functioning thyroid, only a doctor can determine how harmful this is to their health, and addressing other problems in the day-to-day lifestyle may be a better approach to long-term weight loss.

The Promises of Alvidar

Alvidar is marketed as the ultimate solution for regulating the thyroid gland, and the makers claim that it will:

• Improve memory

• Regulate and improve the metabolism

• Increase the ability to concentrate

• Regulate bowel movements and improve the digestive system

• Reduce symptoms of depression

• Reduce the chances of depression or mood swings

Key Ingredients in Alvidar

Alvidar is made with a combination of herbs and natural extracts such as:

• Garlic

• Echinacea

• Valerian Root

• St. Johns Wort

• Mate

• Ginseng

• Ginkgo Leaf

• Capsaicin

• Saw Palmetto Berry

• Meadowseet

Many of these ingredients are found in different concentrations in diet pills and weight loss supplements today; still, there is little evidence available that suggests the Alvidar formula is safe and effective for the average dieter.

The Drawbacks of Alvidar

While Alvidar claims to tackle the problem of an underactive thyroid, there is not enough scientific evidence available to support its claims. Alvidar promotes its ‘in-house studies' to back up the benefits listed on the website, but these may be a biased study that only highlight the positive results of the tests.

Alvidar does come with a guarantee, but taking the supplements without a doctor's direction could be dangerous. Some people may experience allergic reactions to many of the herbal extracts present in the pills.

Bottom Line: An underactive thyroid can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes, and consulting with a doctor will determine if the thyroid is truly the problem behind any weight gain. Taking an herbal, over the counter supplement that effects the thyroid can be dangerous, and there is not enough information available about Alvidar to support all of its claims.
