Alzheimer's Disease is Probably NOT Genetic

Alzheimer's preventable? A friend of mine, Dr. Scott Doughman, made this statement to me several months ago. I was floored! It turns out that in small studies,up to 70% of Alzheimer cases may be preventable with Omega 3 supplements.

Research studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between low levels of circulating Omega 3s in our bodies and the risk of Alzheimer's onset. The studies suggest that the primary cause of Alzheimer's is not genetics but low levels of Omega 3.

It is now thought that the developments of plaques in the brain which lead to Alzheimer's disease are preventable with proper amounts of circulating Omega 3. .

There is enough compelling evidence to support this that NIH is conducting a large clinical trial to access the validity of research done with smaller test populations. Unfortunately the results of this trial won't be available until 2010.

Most of us are very familiar with the effects of Alzheimer's. We either have a parent or know someone who is a caregiver for a parent with Alzheimer's. Such a devastating disease may be cured with a simple vitamin.

Why Aren't We Getting Enough Omega 3?

The reason that we have low levels of Omega 3s is most likely related to our diet. We tend to eat fatty foods that are high in Omega 6. The body needs to maintain a ratio between the two to prevent plaques from forming. Omega 6 is pro-inflammatory, while Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory. Having significantly higher levels of Omega 6 than Omega 3 sets up a more pro-inflammatory environment which may lead to many health conditions.

Not All Omega 3 Vitamins Are the Same

The active component of Omega 3 is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). The more DHA a product contains the more preventative benefits the product delivers.

Dr. Scott Doughman is a PhD biochemist. Based on his findings Dr. Doughman came to believe that there were no products currently on the market that delivered optimal amounts of Omega 3/DHA to help prevent a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer's Disease.

The source of Omega 3 also helps determine the amount of DHA present in the body. Most Omega 3 vitamins use fish oil as a source for their Omega 3s. Fish get most of their Omega 3s from ingesting algae omega 3s.

Thank you for providing needed information. I for one had no idea that Alzheimers could be prevented. I thought it was a roll of the dice whether or not you got Alzheimers. I've learned something today.
