Rant of a New Hubber

Are You My Fan Because You Have to?

When you were a kid, did you have to pretend to be someone's friend because your parents made you? Or because your best friend was their friend, then that made you have to be their friend too. I may be new to HubPages but I wasn't born yesterday. Don't be my fan because you have to. I want some real criticism here peeps.

I have made exactly 7 cents over the last two weeks. Hey, but that's not why we writer's write is it. We are expressing ourselves through our writing, right? I am already a Registered Nurse. I am a professional. But that's all technical stuff. Except maybe thinking of a comeback for a remark by a smart aleck doctor. No imagination required. Wiping someones butt and changing adult diapers is not really the stuff of creativity is it? I truly love to write. Maybe it hasn't shown through in my hubs yet. Sure I can churn one out in an hour. But who wants to read it. Apparently not too many people (see above).

Hub Challenge

Okay so I accept Hub challenge. I am kicking 40 years old. Don't take this the wrong way but, I read all these comments saying "I have writer's block, help". Oh my goodness! How is this contracted? Is this a contagious disease? What are the symptoms? COME ON, there a gozillion (Forest Gump) things in the world to write about.

Give me some good solid criticism. I can take it. Trust me I have been through more crap being a Nurse than someone giving me a little constructive criticism. Thick skin is a requirement for being a nurse, I have seen people take their last breath so come on people. I want to be a better writer.

Constructive Criticism

Okay, okay. Constructive criticism, you don't need to tear people apart for them to understand how to improve. No one likes to be ripped a new one. In case any of you don't know what constructive criticism is (and I know there are plenty of people who don't). Here is the definition:

  • A compassionate attitude towards the person qualified for criticism. Having higher experience gift, respect, knowledge in specific field and being able to verbally convince at the same time, this person materially, morally, emotionally or spiritually. For high probability in succeeding compassionate criticism, the critic has to be in some kind of healthy personal relationship with the other one, which is normally a parent to child, friend to friend, teacher to student. spouse to spouse or any kind of recognized authority in specific field. Hence the word constructive is used so that something is created or visible outcome is generated rather than the opposite.

Thanks To My Fans

Don't get me wrong. When I first started on HubPages I was thrilled that I got a fan almost immediately after I published my first hub Retail Therapy. I still am thrilled every time I see someone new there. I thought; wow maybe I am good at this. Before it was just friends and family who read my stuff. My husband has always been my biggest fan.

I know I haven't given it enough time. Who am I to think I would become an expert in two weeks. I laugh out loud at the thought. Not too many people become successful over night in writing. I know it happens but those aren't the rule, they are the exception.

As a writing community I know that there are well educated people here. From experience I know people who are well educated in the English language understand a personal rant. Maybe I am guilty for dumbing down my articles. I think that may be a hold over from my real job. Mississippi has a large population of poor, uneducated people so dumbing it down is a requirement. No offense to my wonderful Mississippians, but if you haven't got a formal education in healthcare you can't understand the jargon, period.

I am probably my own worst critic anyhow. See how I just did that in my last paragraph. Trying to figure out why I suck. I am laughing out loud again. Obviously from the number of hits I get on my hubs I do.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the nice people I have already met here. I really appreciate the encouragement. For those who haven't read my work or have and haven't said anything. Grow you some and let me have something to grow on. Come on I know you have it in you. I dare you

WONDERFUL! I love your outlook Tammy. This is a great hub and says exactly how I feel. There is a forum by the way which I have found recently in my journey through HubPages. I have not joined it yet, because as you say, I need to grown some. And in my last hub "It Takes a Village" you can tell that I have not yet developed a thick skin.

Never-the-less, please check it out and if you are looking for that kind of assistance, you should join in. Here's the link http://tinyurl.com/yjbn392 Good luck.

Oh ya, I am an instant fan!

Thank you Duchess, I was an instant fan when I read your hubs too. I guess I forgot to mention that. I didn't think with your multitude of fans that you would even reply. Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. REALLY!!

Okay Tammy, all I can say is, You are good. Your articles are very well written and interesting. And I'm not getting paid to say that. LOL! I only comment on articles that I have something, (I feel), to contribute. I read a lot of my fan's and others hubs, and only comment on the ones where I can be sincere. The way that I got my fan base is to read and comment on hubs that I found interesting. I'll never do a wholesale campaign for fans, because I like to read my fan's hubs, and be sincere. At ease girl you are good, don't change a thing.

Hi Tammy, Thanks for joining my fan club and love the hub! I'm not much of a writer myself, I'm more of a (proof)reader, therefore my hubs are few and far between, but I'm trying to improve on that! Great day to you! :-)

I do believe you're going to liven up HubPages! 16 hubs and 20 fans in 2 weeks? Great going, I'd say.

I love the way you write but take this hub, I would have added a few pics to stamp your views and not my Dr Evil pic ok. I would deff have inserted a pic of a bunch of fans all squealing, a pic of a grumpy cartoon critic, and at the very beginning a little friends pic. It really would have given the hub a really good look, you can still edit it. No need to thank me ; )

You're too hard on yourself, Tammikins! You are a good writer! As for writer's block, I've never had that. I have the opposite problem - diarrhea of the pen...or keyboard. Sorry, I know that's gross, but it is fitting!

Ok, gotta know how you got those thumbnail pictures up there! Is is something you had to do manually or is it something HubPages offers that I don't know about? Whatever - it's a great idea! Love it. And I certainly agree, it's a great makeover on an already fabulous Hub!

Your Mac doesn't do laundry? Maybe you should get the Ivory Snow Leopard!

I like your style and will come back to check out more of your hubs. I can't give you any constructive criticism since your hubs are better than mine, but I will make a suggestion ....if I can think of one!

Keep it up!

This is an unusal Hub, because it is very open, and it looks from the comments as though you have made changes following suggestions.

We have found one of the best things about Hub pages is that some hubbers are very helpful.

We don't go on some of the Forum pages anymore because the arguments were not reasoned, just contradictions (and shouting).

In our opinion, the very best Hub writers put in a lot of research and time. They have no trace of 'dumbing down'. Some of our favourites are serious , others entertaining. The best can be both!

We have not yet found the magical key to making money, so generally write about what interests us.

We have many other interests and commitments, so are usually in a hurry - sadly this shows up in (lack of) quality.

We will be looking at more of your Hubs (that's when we aren't searching for a computer that will do laundry - lol).

resspenser, no sadly even the snow leopard does not do the laundry.

I am just a fast learner and have been writing for myself really my whole life.

I like your stories. Thanks for the comment and reading.

2patricias:

Thanks for the very lengthy and helpful comment. I am learning every day about how to write good articles. I do take constructive criticism very well.

It seems as though I have attracted some really good writers; including you two. Plus my hub was voted number one with 31% of votes in the "hubnugget roundup" ....so generally I am on the right track I suppose. I have visited the forums but generally didn't participate as they seem a little obnoxious and I have better things to do than that.

Please do read me. I have been reading you too. I will continue to write and improve.

Thanks again for reading my work!
