Am I Too Old to Take Piano/Keyboard Lessons?

Lots of people quit piano/keyboard lessons when they were young, or didn't ever have the opportunity to take piano lessons and have always dreamed of taking them.  They wonder if they're too old to begin taking lessons again.

There is a common myth that you have to take piano/keyboard lessons when you're very young or you will not be able to learn.  While it is better to take lessons when you are young, it is never to late to learn.  In fact, you will continue to grow older, whether you begin lessons or not.  So, the question isn't how long will it take, the question is, will you be better off if you learn or if you don't learn in that time?

How many people do you know who have gone back to college as adults with a better appreciation for the knowledge they are gaining and how it will directly affect their lives and their pocketbooks?  Don't tell me they aren't better students because of a better sense of what they are accomplishing.  The same thing can help adult piano students.  They have wished they would have stuck with it and learned piano in their youth.  They want to be piano players and they want to have that skill.  They would do anything to have it, even practice!  There's the key.  They will have fun and they will appreciate what they are learning because they are older and wiser and they know the value of the education.

So, don't give up on that dream.  Find some good piano keyboard lessons and get going with your dream!

Perhaps the question for me it to ask, "Do I Have Any Musical Talent?", haha, nicely done Amy...a nice piece.

Thanks, Jim. I think you probably have more talent than you realize, whether it's musical or not.

Thanks for the comment, Juliet. I'm sure you could learn it with a little time. Sometimes it is easier to practice a song with hands apart and then put them together once each hand knows what it's supposed to do. The harmonica is a beautiful instrument and I would love to learn it.

You're right, Steve. As long as you are breathing and thinking and moving, you can learn to play the piano.
