The Future of Music

Some young musicians have talent and technique, but appear to be missing a true love for the music.

It is very encouraging to browse the internet and find young musicians who obviously love to play.

You hear stories of children being locked in their rooms or forced to play against their will. This is very sad and I'm sure it happens even today, but what a pleasure it is to see kids playing from their heart.

It gives me hope that the future of music is secure and will not be lost to rote memorization and casual interest.

With so many music, rhythm, beat and sound generators being used in today's commercial music, it is wonderfully refreshing to see that new, fresh, and very real talent is still abounding.

Recently, I was showing my ten year old son, Kyle, some new chords on the piano and how to use them--minor chords, minor 7th's, minor 9th's, etc. He loves to play ragtime and 7th note boogie's and is not particularly fond of anything slow and melodic. He started out just randomly using the chords, then after a bit he began putting together a slow, melancholic, tune. My two teenaged daughters (who usually don't have a lot of patience with his "jamming") sat down to listen to him play. When he finished his tune, my oldest daughter expressed how beautiful the song had been. Kyle raised his head and that's when we noticed tears brimming in his eyes. The music had moved him to tears--I love it when musicians play from the heart! Since that day, I have noticed a distinct change in his playing style as he searches for that depth of feeling again.

Here's a few videos of young musicians who play from the heart. I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

I love it when children love to play music too! Learning music should be a great experience, something that will stick with them for life, not just a chore their parents make them do.

Growing up, music was always my favorite pastime (besides reading that is). My parents never had to force me to play; I just loved it!

Thanks for stopping by Rose! Me too...music and reading have always been my favorite hobbies.

When I was 2 or 3, I used to get spoons and arrange books on the floor so I could play the "drums".

I have loved playing music for as long as I can remember.

I love your article. Thanks for sharing it and the videos too.

It amazes me how musically talented kids really are nowadays. Wow!

I think that music should be instilled in kids of all ages, and no kid should be left without music. Music is stimulating, and it encourages kids to do great in school and be successful and also to stay out of trouble. Kids need music in their lives and we have to make sure that kids will never be deprived of it.
