Amazon has always been associated with books. They are one of the prominent booksellers of all the times and they primarily deal with online shopping. Kindle is an amazing product brought forth from Amazon. Basically it is an e-book reading device. The name may sound funny, but be warned it delivers all the punches expected from a product of similar genre. Paper display which is electronic in nature is employed and the device can read only AZW format. This format is proprietary in nature. Contents are downloaded on the fly using evdo network. Amazon has named the service as Whispernet and it is free for use as of this typing. The product is not sold outside the United States plainly due to the fact that Whispernet is available in there only. Although it was launched with 88000 titles which were ready to be downloaded, that number has seen a dramatic growth in the following years. The device was so much applauded by the citizens such that it was out of stock in many parts of the country until April 2008. The device is currently priced at 359$ although it was released at 399$.

The specifications of the device are listed here. The screen sported a resolution of 800x600. The screen size was 6” diagonally. 167 ppi densities coupled with a level four electronic grayscale paper was employed. A side scroller for the screen is also found. Linux was the primary operating system and it featured the 2.6-10 kernel. A fully functional QWERTY was also present in the device. This is powered by a Marvell PXA255 which is running at approximately 400 Mhz. Memory expansion is made possible with the help of SD expansion slot and the device is powered by a 1530mAh lithium polymer battery. At just 292 grams, the device also boasts of 3.5mm stereo connector, AC adapter and an inbuilt speaker.

Although favored by many it has been subjected to various criticisms also. The device has a protective covering, and it is not suitable to hold the device with the cover kept open because there is a high chance of accidentally pressing one of the buttons. Besides the screen also has a very low refresh rate, transferring of e-books from one kindle to the other is strictly prohibited by the terms of usage. An innovative feature is the presence of Digital text platform. This has been developed for the budding writers, who would like to reach the common mass. Easier uploading and varying tariff schemes for downloading can be applied. Easter eggs are usually associated with such devices and Kindle makes no exception about that too. On pressing Alt, Shift and the M button a game of the world famous Minesweeper starts. The device also features an experimental browser, using which the end user can browse for documents. Monthly subscription is charged for the various RSS feeds incorporated into the gadget, but the tech savvy can easily get free access to these by using the above mentioned browser.
