AMD stands for Advance Micro Devices and it mainly produces computer processors for different types of computers including laptops. The Athlon lineup of processors was made available in 2003 and is now commonly known as Athlon classic.

Now there are also many types of athlon processors of AMD that can be found in the market. Athlons also introduced 64 bit processors for AMD which are theoretically two times faster than 32 bit processors. A 1000 Mhz 32bit processor can process 4 bytes 1000 million times in a second but a 64bit 1000Mhz can process 8 bytes 1000 million time each second. A 64 bit processor however requires different software type than those used for 32 bit because they are designed for sending only 4 bytes each second to the processing unit.

AMD athlon now also offer multi core processing in one single chip. The processor number can range from 2 to 4 processors in one chip. This technology has been adapted by the people and its potentials are now growing and 3.2 GHz of multi core processors are now available meaning that a four part processor having 3.2 GHz each means more than 12.5 GHz of processing power.

The dual core chips are known as Athlon X2 and the four chips is known as Phenom or Athlon X4. An athlon X3 is also available that has 3 working processors and is known as spider and can also be referred as Phenom X3.
