Obesity, perscriptions, OTC Drugs... What is America thinking?
67
OK, maybe it is the Olympics, maybe I am getting old, but it is time for another soap box. Seriously people am I the only one who looks around and is shocked by what I am seeing our children and adults looking like? It seems like every time I turn around there is a new medication being shown on TV, I am getting emails constantly on how to get prescription medications online, and the latest thing I have read was that they are designing a drug so we don't have to actually work out.
Seriously people come on! How in the world can we expect to be considered a World Power when the majority of our population would absolutely have a heart attack if asked to run a mile, heck a block! The latest study I have seen is that by the year 2048 EVERY American Adult will be overweight. OK don't lynch me I didn't do the study, and I know that there will always be some out there like our Olympians, but when I look around I can honestly see them being the very small group.
Last week I went to the beach with my daughter. I have been REALLY working on losing weight and getting in shape since her. I am proud to say I have lost 20 lbs this year! But back to the issue at hand. I looked around the beach and I remember growing up and thinking how I wanted to be in shape for the summer so I could look good in a swim suit. It seems like even the 14-16 year olds have let themselves go! And I am not talking about a pound or two, I am talking about 15-45+ lbs overweight.
I go to the amusement park with my daughter and they actually have scales for the CHILDREN'S rides! I am not joking here! Curiosity got the best of me and I had to go and ask what the weight limit was... I almost fell over for the ride I asked about it was 125 lbs. THE HEIGHT LIMIT WAS 52 INCHES! I am 63 inches tall and weigh 124 lbs at age 32 after having a child. It clearly was an issue if they had to put a scale there, they don't do that for one child. What kind of health issues are these children going to have?
Diabetes, self esteem, productivity, ADD, obesity, hypertension, these are all things that children are being diagnosed with! And the solution? They are not being told to go on a diet, or work out, or change their lifestyle... No heaven forbid we do that! We are putting them on medications to falsely tell the body that there is nothing wrong.
We are creating a pattern that cannot lead to anything good. See our bodies are actually designed to work a certain way. An interesting fact that I have learned is that when we feel something wrong with one of our organs liver, gall bladder, heart, etc that organ is already damaged and working at less than 40%. The general consensus now is to get a medication so you don't notice the symptom anymore high blood pressure, heart pains, etc. This creates a cycle.
When you give your body something artificial to mask the symptom even something as simple as a fever you are preventing your body from doing what it needs to do. Even more dangerous is when you take something for blood pressure etc. What happens is your artificially tell your body something is working that isn't. After that you go and take your blood pressure which says everything is good so nothing in your life changes. You continue on and when you realize it again they up your dose. This cycle continues until the body can no longer continue.
I understand at times the need to take a certain medications while you get yourself back on track. But it is a horrible habit. We have to change our habits to get rid of the problem not mask it. It is amazing when you look at the research that shows that Americans take over 75% of the prescription medications in the world, yet we are only 4.5% of the world population (as of 8:33 EST 8/12).
During the Olympics again I see advertisements for Tylenol. It amazes me that in other countries Tylenol is a regulated medication, yet in the US we take it like candy. We hear all the time in commercials how Tylenol will protect you from a heart attack and to take it daily. Yes, this is true, but it also significantly raises your risk of a stroke!
Continuing on, on my rant is cold medications. There is a reason we get fevers, coughs, throw up, and sneeze. Lets look at these alone... A fever is the body's way of killing unwanted bacteria. Bacteria and viruses thrive at guess what temperature? (Shock 98-99 degrees!) We are an incubator! Coughing and sneezing is the body's way of expelling things from our bodies. And throwing up is the body's way of getting out something that we have eaten that we need to get out of our body.
So what do we do? We take fever and cough suppressants, and things to prevent us from throwing up. Yes I know these are not fun! But we are only exacerbating our issues by suppressing the issue.
We are literally killing ourselves and don't even realize it. I see children who are obese and on more medications than I can count, I see adults spending the end of their days incapacitated and taking 15-30 medications a DAY just to live. I can't understand what has happened or how we got this way! As many of you know I have a young daughter who will be growing up in this country and I do believe we are a wonderful country, but if we don't do something I can't see how we will be able to continue with the medical problems alone that we will be facing.

HOly crap! A scale at a theme park?!?!? yea, now that's saying something lol.
I have been working on losing weight, too. I lost 50lbs, but need to lose more before I'll be happy with myself. It's hard work and people nowadays are just way too lazy to do anything for themselves. I have my lazy days and I eat bad now and then, but getting back on track is what it's about. Not saying "oh no, i just had ice cream, there goes my diet for the week... might as well pig out for the rest of it."
I would never put myself out there and go to the beach in a bathing suit right now. I'm surprised people aren't embarassed to go looking like that.
A pill for exercise? Yea, they realy have thought of everything. Geez. Our country comes out with the laziest things!!
Para- You bring up a very good point of going the opposite direction. I did the Master Cleanse earlier this year and saw how in a matter of days how it affected my daughter (hence why I only did 11 days). If it can affect her with not eating it can do the same the other direction, moderation is the key with everything!
Starr- Congrats on the 50! That is a lot of weight! It is very hard to do and I applaud that you are taking the steps to improve! It is a day by day thing, not something we can change overnight, but as a society it really is getting out of hand!
Thanks for the comments!
I have been watching alot of things like this on TV. We, Mississippi, are in the top of the heap for having overweight people. I know people talk about us frying all of our food. But, alot of people I know don't fry at all. I'm not sure what my ideal weight is. I am 39, (I'll be 40 Sept 30th), I'm 5-8 and I just weighed myself. I weigh 132. I don't know if that's where I should be or not. One thing I have noticed with people I am around who is visibly overweight is, they drink alot of cokes. Not diet ones, regular. I wonder if that would make a difference if people were to change that. It's hot and humid here so people drink alot of cokes. I dont'. I have kidney stones often, so cokes, coffee, etc is off limits to me and also to my husband since he has them alot. We don't keep them in our home. He is 5-11 and weighs 164. He is 42. I'm not sure if that is his ideal weight either. Anyway, we drink alot of water, cranberry juice and lemonade. The coke thing is just something I noticed that these people have in common. Would it make a difference if they were to go to diet drinks? Just a thought. Great hub!! Keep up the good work!
Thank your for the response! The link at the end of this sentence is a link to one of the insurance companies and how they would rate your height and weight for you and your husband: http://www.healthchecksystems.com/heightweightchar
For kidney stones you may want to try a detox or a flush. I can do some research on that if you would like. I know that there are cleanses you can do for most organs.
As for coke vs. diet coke, diet coke is actually MUCH worse for the body than coke. If you are going to drink it just go for it get the real sugar instead of the junk that they put in diet cokes. The major thing used now is Splenda and it has the wonderful effect of at 95 degrees it becomes Famaldahyde. (Guess what our bodies are over 95 degrees so yep, your body converts that right into what is in the jars of high schools with the dead frogs!) Just an additional FYI :)
That IS the reality - We are a declining world power and compromised health issues due to lifestyle choices are just part of the visible symptoms.
Continuing this rant I am sure I will write more on it tonight, but I just read a report that "new studies show overweight people may not be in bad shape." I swear more and more it seems like the media and these people doing "studies" just want us to think everything is OK... I am sorry but when a 10-12 year old weighs as much as I do being over a foot shorter that is NOT good!
Blogging, I agree with almost everything you've said, but just as an aside about your last comment: I've read the same studies, & what has become apparent to me (and if you read a lot of my hubs, many of them cover this), is that the key factor in determining health and fitness isn't weight or BMI, but its body fat %. If you read the studies, they're basically saying that you can be heavy & healthy, but that most of the healthy heavy people are active & have a smaller waist circumference than their unhealthy counterparts. AND, the same studies say that you can be "normal weight" and unhealthy, but that most of the normal unhealthy individuals are inactive & have a larger waist circumference than their healthy counterparts. This makes me say, "well, duh." If we all started concentrating on what our body fat percentage was, and not what our weight or BMI is, then we would all have a better grasp of whether or not we are living a healthy lifestyle.
Vrey well put and I agree. I think that Amerians in general pick one thing they can easily discern which is often their weight instead of their BMI. For example using myself, when I got married I weighed 120 lbs and looked great but never worked out I was just lucky! Now I weight 125-130 but am tone and have more muscle mass. Over all if more would just take the DUH factor into account we would not be having the issues we face now... but as I tell my husband often: Common sense is no longer common!
If you'll just watch television, all sorts of health supplements, vitamins and fat burning pills are being advertised, but for me no pill can substitute a healthy lifestyle.
Very true, but so many are trying to do it... And their doctors are telling them they are OK because of results that are altered with the medications etc.
Really great hub on a very important topic. It's true that currently 40 percent of Americans are considered overwweight and out of that number, 1 in 4 classified as obese.
This is sad enough for adults, but as you mentioned, even worse for our children. I fear the trend will continue unless our instant gratification and sedentary culture changes drastically. As a whole it can be done, but it starts (like everything else) at home.
I applaud you for your discipline.

I agree with you. When obesity is seen as the norm, the battle is lost. The opposite extreme of ultra-thin is equally dangerous of course.
