It was in 1986, that the artistic interpretation of the Lady Liberty by Augustus Gaudens was approved as the design that would be used to represent the gold bullion coin of the United States — the American Eagle Gold Coin. The famous Saint-Gaudens design had already been previously used in the American currency in 1907. Since the authenticity of the gold used in making these coins is guaranteed by The United States Mint itself, their value is estimated based on the current rate of gold in the market, i.e. unlike other coins minted in the US, the American Gold Eagle coin does not have a pre-determined face value.
The design of American Gold Eagle coins has always had something different to offer, across every decade in which they have been produced:
Gold Eagles minted in 1986-1991 had their dates presented in Roman numerals, whereas the ones minted in 1992 used the Arabic numbers
The more recent of Gold Eagles (2008) has a unique ‘W’ on it, which is a reference to the fact that their manufacturing was carried out at West Point.
Coins for Investors
The American Gold Eagle Coins also present an opportunity for making safe, authorized investments as the price of these 22-carat gold coins has always increased with time and their production is handled by the US government itself. The American Eagles have also been minted in other precious metals like platinum and silver besides gold. These coins are enthusiastically collected by coin collectors too.
Coins for Collectors: American Eagle Proofs
For those who are seriously inclined towards compiling a coin collection, proof versions of the American Eagle Bullion Coin is recommended. The American Eagle Proof Coins are created through a specialized minting process that includes the use of uniquely-treated dies. Each of the proof coins is struck twice or more by the coin die being used. This gives the gold coins a very precise detail. This sort of fine detail does not appear on the American Gold Eagle Coins minted for conventional use. As a result of this extra time, labor and effort, the production costs of these proof coins is much higher than the normal Golden Eagles.
No matter what you choose these magnificent American Eagle gold coins are sure to flounce your hearts.
