Like millions of other Americans, I find myself captivated with the Fox show "American Idol." Is it the appeal of young people rising from the ranks of obscurity to shine on a national stage? Yes, most definitely. Is it the mixed bag of commentary from the judges? Proabably. But whatever the reason, "American Idol" continually grabs us and leaves us waiting for more.

Last night was the first show my family and I watched this season; (Now I know why people have Tivo). Nonetheless, I found myself, as I often do (along with my two young children) in serious critique mode. Having spent a fair amount of my life listening to, studying, and performing music, I feel I have a small shred of knowledge to disperse to my (2) eager fans.

"Daddy, was he or she good?"

"Were they pitchy?" - Isn't it funny to hear your children mimic terms they hear without a clue to their meaning? Nevertheless, I do have a slight ear bent toward appreciating talent; in my "opinion".

Introductions aside, the purpose of this Hub is to offer a humble "opinion" on last night's show; the good, the adequate, and the hopeful. So, before you make a beeline for your slingshot and stones to aim in my direction, hear me out.

I begin with what I felt was the best performance of the night.

The Top Four:

Carly Smithson:

Wow! What a voice this young woman has. Truly gifted and very humble, Carly hit every note placed in front of her with luscious tone and control. The song "Blackbird," along with her explanation why she chose it was stunningly beautiful. Great range. Excellent dynamics. Exquisite voice. Very nice. She'll definitely be back!

David Archuleta:

Wow again! For a young man of 17, David was incredible. Apparently he forgot some lyrics last week so to rebound the way he did was most impressive. The transparent humility this young man possesses is evident. "The Long and Winding Road" never sounded so good. His parents should be proud.

David Cook:

Let me begin by saying that just because David hails from the Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs, MO, my opinion of his talent is unbiased; for David has it in spades. Paula Abdul commented he was ready to sell records. I agree. David is a natural talent poised to front any rock act. Great stage presence coupled with charisma aplenty, David Cook "day tripped" his way into my top four.

Syesha Mercado:

According to last night's reference, Syesha was in the bottom 3 last week. I can't comment on that because I didn't see the show, but last night she rose to the top in my book. Even though I felt she "labored" through her performance of "Yesterday," she did so with passion, control, and poise. This young woman has a wonderful sultry voice. She needs to move on.

The Middle Four:

The next group of contestants I'm placing in no particular order simply because none of them performed so well to separate from the pack. They're all gifted and exceptionally talented, but due to a freakish case of "let's all pick the wrong song in the wrong key with a jumbled up arrangement," no one stood out. These contestants are.

Michael Johns,

Jason Castro,

Chikezie, and

Amanda Overmyer

All four possess obvious ability or they wouldn't be where they are. I just need a few more performances to formulate an honest opinion; just not much to say right now.

The Hopeful Three:

My purpose is to not cast stones toward any of these talented young people because they steward a gift I do not have. My hopes are their hope; that they can amp up their game and bring it strong next week.

Brooke White:

Very cute performer with a really solid voice, Brooke is another extremely humble person, a trait to be admired. I think she chose the wrong song for her. Let's look for her to bounce back next week.

Kristy Lee Cook:

Kristy is another very talented young woman who made a bad song choice. She needs to work on her stage presence and delivery without focusing on missing notes. She seems more suited to do country. But that is merely "opinion."

Ramiele Malubay:

The final performer on last night's show, Ramiele gave us an overall snapshot of the show in general. This sprite young woman has a big heart and a big voice. I hope the viewers, just because they saw her last, don't forget her. I feel she has a lot more music in her.

Hopefully my "opinions" won't be misunderstood as mean or degrading. I only wish to provide my feelings after last night's American Idol. This is a great showcase for many gifted young people. I too would have made it onto the show; the most painful auditions to listen to part that is. Cheers!

My favorites are Carly and your 'middle four.' If I had to say who I want to win, it would be Jason Castro. He didn't have his best night this Tuesday but he moves me. He has a unique sound and style.

Check out his performance on YouTube, singing Hallelujah.

Hi Rob,

How funny, last night was the first time I had watched the show all the way through. I am a die hard Beatles fan so for me last night was extremely painful. That said, I think your choices are pretty spot on from observing the show once. The thing that amazes me is that the judges never change from season to season. I actually like Simon who, in my opinion, is honest and tries to help the performer improve. Paula simply drives me nuts, in fact so much so, the show has become hard to watch. I guess maybe I am not much of a "true" fan because I am simply bored with "still another season" of the show. But then what do I know, the American public still seems to love it, I am admittedly a nerd! lol

Carly's probably my favorite. I'm surprised she was on the bottom 3 today. :-( At least she's here for another week. :-)

I do think that last night's show was terrible. I mean yeah there were a few good points, but for the most part the performances weren't the best.

I don't think that Chikezie can top last weeks performance.

Thanks for all the feedback. The results show tonight further solidified my lack of knowledge and insight. But at least I was consistent. I had Carly first, she was in the bottom 3, I had Ramiele at the bottom and she was safe tonight, and with Amanda getting the boot I guess I won't have another performance to base an "opinion" on. I'm thinking about doing a survey. What do you all think?
