America's Got Talent Audition Process

I recently auditioned to be on the popular television show called America’s Got Talent and wanted to share the experience with everyone and anyone who may be interested in the process. I am still waiting for the phone call informing me if I have made it on the show, but overall it was an interesting experience. This is going to be more of an information piece rather than anything satirical.

The process starts out with me going online and finding out when and where the auditions are taking place. I googled America’s Got Talent and got to their official website where they had posted casting news. I looked for the location nearest to me which happened to be Chicago and then used their online form to sign up for an audition. The guidelines were pretty simple, tell the judges what you plan to do, your name, and make sure the audition is no longer than 90 seconds.

You do not have to sign up in advance for the audition, but doing so guaranteed me time with the judges. Many people sign up day of onsite but there is no guarantee you will get to audition for the judges based on time constraints.

About two week before the scheduled date of the audition, I received a phone call from an employee of America’s Got Talent and the woman on the phone told me I had an 8:00AM audition. I was excited because I actually thought they were making appointments and the audition process would be a fairly quick process. No, I was wrong.

I got there with my band-mate at 7:30AM and walked into the main “holding area.” There weren’t an obnoxious amount of people there ahead of us, probably around 300 people. Now, all 300 were not there to audition, the majority were friends and family there to support the act. After about 45 minutes of standing in this long line, we started moving. I would say we were waiting for a total of an hour & a half in the holding room before we were given our bracelets which signified if we were someone auditioning or a friend/family member. By this time there were a ton of people in line behind us.

Once we got our bracelets, we were moved into the hallway where we waited another twenty to thirty minutes before we were given our number. The number is what you see on American Idol and all the other reality shows where numerous people are auditioning. I guess it is their “Big Brother” way of knowing who is who.

After receiving the number, we are then moved to a lobby area where we handed in our release forms and had an administrative assistant make sure all the paperwork was filled out correctly. After the paperwork is approved (which took about 5 minutes) we were then moved to a large second holding area.

As we walked into the room (which was filled with probably a thousand people) we heard an announcement that we would be moved to one more location for a few minutes before we met the judges. I thought things were moving along quite nicely and estimated I would be heading home in about an hour…tops.

We were all herded into the first holding area (where we started earlier in the morning) and corralled like cattle into a certain section of the gigantic room. Suddenly there was a large crane that was driven into the room and a make-shift stage was assembled. A woman used a megaphone to inform everyone that we would be doing some filming for the intro of the show. We had to be energetic, happy and crazy for the cameras. Now, this is the part where when you watch the show, you see a large crowd all yell out they are “America’s next big talent” or say “Chicago’s Got Talent” etc. It’s all in good fun and it was interesting to see how they go about making these promos. It was interesting until about two hours into the process. Seriously, we were screaming and yelling the same lines over and over and over again for an eternity. The producers kept telling us it would only be a few more minutes, but that went on for hours.

After we were done with those promos, they informed us that Jerry Springer (the previous host), would be replaced by Nick Cannon. From that point, they brought Nick Cannon out and did all his promos, which took another couple hours.

Finally, the filming ended and we were called into the second holding area once again. They called out the numbers in increments of twenty five which at a 90 second audition time per act, averaged out to about 45 minutes per 25.

We were in this room for ever. I was so hungry I was about to bite random strangers walking by so my partner decided it would be in everyone’s best interest to find us some nourishment. We found a food court and I ordered the most expensive cheeseburger on the face of the earth. My cheeseburger was $13.95 and the fires and drink were extra. Wow! I spent $20 on lunch for myself. That is plain old ridiculous.

Anyway after lunch we sat and waited and then sat and waited some more until finally our number was called. We were separated into a few different groups before we went in to see the judges. There was a group for singers, a group for dancers and miscellaneous acts and one for musicians.

For some reason the singers were carted into the judges immediately and the musicians watched group after group of singers and dancers make their way to see the judges as we just sat back in annoyance. Finally we were brought to the judges’ room and then seated outside for another 45 minutes.

The time had finally come and we all went into the judges’ room where three judges and a cameraman were positioned. We were called one by one to the font of the judges to perform our act while it was being video-taped for the executive producers in Los Angeles. The judges’ onsite informed us that we would be contacted in a few weeks after the executive producers watched the video of today’s performance. So, really they were not judges at all; or were they?

After we performed out rendition of the Black Crowes “She Talks to Angels,” the other musicians in the room with us all applauded and shook our hand because they knew they were in the company of greatness. No, really, we got the biggest applause from not only the judges, but our competition…it was nice.

We all exited the room and were told to wait for a few more minutes as the judges made sure all our paperwork was filled out and they had all the right information. Suddenly the judges called back a few acts to perform a second song and I was not one of those called.

My partner thinks we have no shot to make it on the show because we were not called back, but I am an optimist and there could be a variety of reasons they were called back. There could have been some paperwork issues; they could have needed a second opinion…whatever. We rocked the audition and I am happy with our performance.

I talked to a friend who also auditioned (not in my group) and he said the same thing happened with his group but the people called back were not very good at all. Who knows? I will keep everyone posted on if I get a call-back. All in all, I spent the entire day at the auditions, got there at 7:30Am and left at 5:30PM. If you plan on auditioning for this show this year or next, pack a lunch regardless of what your “appointment” is.

Hopefully this was an interesting article and answered any questions you may have had on the audition process.

hey Adam, I was in Chicago on Sunday with my husband he auditioned as well, I totally hear ya on that about the "COMERCIAL SPOT" omg that was the most boring thing ever, not to mention my husband being a singer the dry air in that gigantic room was really affecting his vocal cords. But we fixed that and got ourselves some soda about what seemed limke a half a mile away from the "heard" of screaming, not very enthused crowd. We arrived at 4 am didnt get outta there till 1 or 2 pm...his number was 17, what was yours? oh and btw we havent heard any news, which is really scaring me, i wish they would tell us somthing either way. well anyways i loved your story and can totally relate, good luck to ya and hopet o see you on the show!

Hey Patricia, my number was 461. I haven't heard anything either. It doesn't scare me that they haven't called because the chances of making it on the show were slim to begin with. I still have hope, but I'm not putting all my eggs in that basket.

Good Luck!

Hey Adam, it came to me yesterday. I actually DO have - if pressed - a favorite music genre, and even a favorite band in that genre. I posted it on "Oldies & Moldies."

You'll recognize which one it is immediately.

Must be a typo, it wasn't Chris Brown. Chris Brown beat Rihanna. You must be mistaken

Jennifer, yeah, I meant Nick Cannon, for some reason I always get them confused.  Thanks for brining it to my attention; I changed it.

Thanks for all the info. Adam --best of luck to you!! -so in this case if you are with a group and just a couple of you want to show up early to hold your place in line, you wouldn't have been able to do it? -since you were inside right away? That would suck!

Dee  says:

So, was Chicago the first place that the auditions were held or are we going to have to do the same thing in Houston with all of the screaming? As a singer, I am concerned about the "old chords" getting too much wear and tear before I have get in there and do my thing.

Adam B  says:

Dee, it's the same routine at every stop...so yeah it will happen when you are there too. Just pretend you are screaming etc.

Hey Adam, why haven't you posted in a while? If they have called you back and you've made it on the show, then you've probably signed the bloody 'confidentiality agreement' and cannot talk about it. So give us a sign....some way or another. Don't worry, they try to scare the crap out of you with those dang contracts. Read my hub "Reality Show Reject" about my experience on a reality show. The selection process is similar, but not nearly the same thing. I understand the apprehension you feel at this point, especially if you've been contacted. If you need to discuss it, send me a private message or something. I know how freaked out the whole process is. And you can rest assured I will hold anything you say in utmost confidence. Good luck, my friend!! P.S. Applying for something like this holds it's share of disappointment, too. Again, read my Hub: Reality Show Reject. Later....

Patricia, I didn't even know it started. I was flipping through the channels last night and didn't even see it. Weird. I went on the website today and saw that they have more auditions airing tonight...I am going to be at rehearsal for my band but I'll DVR it, for sure to see if I recognize anyone.

So wait, you did NOT perform infront of Piers, Sharon and David? Or was it them? Did you perform infront of the audience? please reply soon

Adam B profile image

Adam B  says:

No I did not perform in front of the judges (David, Sharon & Piers) I was in a room with 4 producers of the show. That is how they decide who they will put with the judges in front of a live audience.

Laura  says:

Oh ok! So all the acts that you see on TV (some REEEALLY bad) are ones that have gone through this process and they were called back a while later to go infront of the judges? That stinks for people who are good because half of the show is seeing people who are...hmm...interesting :)

nice of you to write this article. so basically you have to audition as described before you can be called back to audition for real in front of a huge audience or is the format different to the UK?

also does anyone know what the residency rules are, ie if you are only in the states on 6 months visa , can you still audtion?

I'm glad I read your blog before going to the America's Got Talent audition in Philly this weekend. It was pretty much as you described. Lots of carting us all around for promo shoots (that took up most of the day). I auditioned with 10 other singers in front of 3 young people with NO camera in the room. There was no reaction from these "judges" at all after any performance by any of us. We were then told we were "cleared to go." Now the wait for the phone call begins....

Christina  says:

That's weird that there was no camera in the room. I went through the Chicago auditions a few weeks ago. Exhausting. There were 2 judges (one older and british) and a camera person. That doesn't sound right that there was no camera. I mean how can they take it back to the producers for them to judge?

Christine  says:

My son auditioned in NYC today. Everything was pretty much the same. They dragged a crowd of us to the opposite end of the building for the "photo op" which got really annoying after awhile. Took forever to get into the actual audition room. There was a guy and a girl with two laptops and NO camera. "They'll let us know". We'll see Definitely should have brought lunch

I went on audition in NYC as well. However, my experience was very different - it was very quick and smooth. I was contacted bu AGT couple months ago, and was labeled as "Q act". From the moment I came into the building (which i did couple hours before my appointment time), I had the AGT staff get me past all the lanes and right into audition room area. There I waited about 10-15 minutes, and auditioned in front of 3-4 people and camera. After that, I was sent to audition with the executive producers. Waited there for about 15 minutes, auditioned, had an interview and was out of there. I was in and out in less than 2 hours. They told me they will let me know in January if I made it.

I was at Chicago audtions and it is as Adam said. Two more things.People who just sing without insturments have to sing without music back up.The other thing is,I was one of those called to talk to the producers. They ask me some more qustions about what I put on my paper work then wanted me to sing a couple more songs.Always keep in mind that they are looking for good acts as well as bad acts. They appered to like me but as what?A good act or bad act? No matter what the out come I loved every minute of it.My wife and I got the chance to see Chicago and Chicago ROCKS!!!!

My daughter and her friend do a singing and dancing duet. They auditioned in Chicago on October 18th. Adam's article is great. I have been looking for others to talk to about our experience and find out about theirs. Our girls are 12 yrs old and after their first 90 seconds that they were filmed, the British producer asked them what else they did. They then sang two other songs,(that they had not practiced) and after a brief wait outside the room, we were "clear to go". We got 5 minutes from the building when I received a call on my cell phone asking us to come back. With lots of excitment we went back to the same room and the producer told us to do the act again, but with a ton of energy. He then sent the girls up to see the executive producers and told them to give it their all. In that room there were about 7 people with laptops and another big camera. They double checked our info outside the door and told us we would hear in January. I did notice that a few people who were coming out of that room were then sent to do an interview, but we were not. I think those were the people with an interesting "story". I did find out from one of the workers that the "Q" room (we were not in this room) that an earlier blogger referred to, is for those people who have sent in videos and they liked, or that have been deemed good TV. They have a specific appointment. Altogether this was a great experience, all positive and very organized. We would definately do it again.
