When one thinks of Indiana, large amounts of cornfields probably come to mind.  There is a lot corn in Indiana, and a lot of other types of crops as well.  What a lot of people do not realize though, is that Amish families own a lot of those fields, and produce many of Indiana’s crops.

The Amish make up a lot of Northwest Indiana’s population, and they have been residing here for over a hundred years.  On these farms you will taste some of the best homemade meals from home grown crops that you have ever had.  You don’t just have to stop at a farm and ask for a bite though; there are numerous wonderful restaurants that offer some of Northwest Indiana’s finest Amish dining!

One of the first restaurants you will want to visit on your trip through Northwest Indiana’s Amish Country, is the Amish Acres Restaurant Barn, located about a mile west of downtown Nappanee.  Hailed as Indiana’s best meal, this restaurant offers iron kettles of bean soup, plus large platters of chicken, ham, beef and other wonderful home-cooked delicacies to choose from.  Don’t forget to try the Shoofy Pie!  Enjoy your tasty home-cooked meal as you dine on antique tables while sitting underneath the hand-hewn beams of the century-old barn.  Looking for something a little lighter?  Enjoy a nice lunch in the old loft!  Either way, you won’t be disappointed!

Looking for dinner and entertainment?  Then look no further!  Stop into Shipshewana and enjoy a wonderful family dining experience at The Blue Gate Restaurant and Theater.  You’ll love the beautiful setting resembling an old white farmhouse that this 600-seat restaurant has to offer. Located in the Riegsecker Marketplace, this restaurant serves up a feast of home-style Amish and Mennonite favorites, including meatloaf, chicken and noodles, meats, homemade bread and 25 different kinds of pie! If you are there early enough, there is also an outstanding breakfast buffet that has become a favorite among the locals. But don’t forget to stick around for the show!

See a matinee or evening bible play, or choose a southern gospel show featuring nationally known talent at the Blue Gate Theatre.  You won’t want to miss it!
