A relatively new joint venture between Amish wood crafters and "English" entrepreneurs is the "Amish Fireplace". This product is essentially a solid wood mantel shell constructed in the true Amish fashion with an electric space heater inserted within the shell. Depending on the retailer, there are different models of the electric space heater available. The space heater is decorated to look like a real fire and when combined with the beautiful wood mantel, creates a warm effect. Customers admire the decorative appearance, bask in the radiated heat, and appreciate the attached wheels that allow the unit to be moved anywhere in the home. Originally marketed as the Heat Surge Roll-n-Glow Amish Fireplace, similar products are now available at some Amish furniture retailers.

The mantel is the true source of value in the fireplace unit. It is handcrafted by Amish woodworkers using superior quality woods and traditional woodworking techniques. This ensures that the mantel is sturdy and attractive, lasting for many years. The conversion varnish used to finish the piece will resist moisture damage and most household corrosive substances, including acetone nail polish. Made in a variety of sizes, they are available in oak, quartersawn oak, cherry and maple. The styles include Mission, Shaker, Charleston, Modesto, Covington, and Westlake.

Amish craftsmen will also build custom fireplace mantels for wall mount applications. These are primarily two-dimensional pieces mounted to the wall, intended to frame a standard existing wall fireplace. Customers make the choices for wood, style and finish and the craftsman carefully combines them together to create a unique home addition. These are of the same high quality craftsmanship as other Amish furniture pieces, constructed using traditional woodworking techniques of dovetail joints and finished with great care. As in other furniture selections, these mantels can be custom made to fit customer specifications. Fireplace mantels such as these are a showpiece for living rooms, libraries, dens or family rooms, giving an air of simple quality. As with any Amish furniture investment, you are adding an heirloom to your home, to be treasured by generations to come.
