Amtrak Economical From Dallas To... Austin, San Antionio, Oklahoma City, Texarkana
73Amtrak out of Dallas / Fort Worth Makes Sense
Looking for a relaxing weekend getaway? Would you like to avoid the long drive? Amtrak may not always be a direct route to your destination, however I have suggestions for you that are both direct to destination and economical!
Leaving Dallas (DAL) /Fortworth (FTW) Area, you can go to Austin (AUS) or San Antonio (SAS), Texas. Driving is comprable travel time, so why not hop the Amtrak train south and relax? Texarkana (TXA) and Oklahoma City (OKC) are north of Dallas, and offer the same advantages of relaxation, timely direct routes, and economical pricing.
What should you consider when travelling with Amtrak?
#1 Amtrak runs on routes that consistently go from town to town, arriving or departing on the same time each day serviced. Check the frequency, as you may find that there are not many options. Example: Departing Dallas is daily at 12:20 pm, arriving in Austin at 7:00 pm. Returning you would depart Austin at 9:31 am, arriving in Dallas at 3:20 pm. Unlike most airlines, if you miss the train you wait until the next day it services the city to your destination. Plan to be on-time.
#2 Not every Amtrak Station is conveniently located to your hotel or a car rental agency. Plan your transportation ahead of time: Research and bring phone numbers to the local taxi cabs or shuttle services and car rentals. Ask the car rental if they will pick you up.
#3 Amtrak tickets may be purchased in advance. You may wish to reserve your seats. Again, successful getaways go smoothly when you plan a few of the details.
#4 Carry-ons are limited to 50 pounds each, maximum 28"x22"x14", up to 2 bags per person. Purses, laptops, strollers, briefcases, diaper bags, oxygen tanks, etc. are considered personal items and are not counted as an official carry-on. (Current guidelines, December 2008.)
#5 Not all stations will allow bags to be checked. Check with Amtrak for the guidelines. Special items, such as golf clubs, skis, surf boards, etc. are considered to be "Special Items". Discuss this when booking, to make sure there will not be complications. You may want to FedEx some items ahead, to the hotel.
#6 Amtrak is cooperative and makes every accomodation possible for passengers with special needs. Please discuss the particulars when booking your reservations. For many people, the Amtrak Train / Bus System is more practical for travel.
#7 Different routes / trains offer different amenities. All Amtrak trains offer a lounge car with snacks for purchase. Many have laptop friendly areas with electrical access. The trip is designed for you to relax while you travel.
For whatever your reasons, next time you are taking a trip within 500 miles of your home, check to see if Amtrak offers you a reasonable alternative to driving. Longer trips are great for seeing the country, and ideal for passengers with special needs. Consider Amtrak, and Enjoy your Adventures!
