An Introduction to Irish Dance

What are some of the benefits of Irish dance?
All human beings have basic instincts to
self-expression and movement to rhythm. Dancers, by honing their abilities, can
simply take these instincts to a higher artistic level. Irish dancers, with
the right training, develop:
• superior strength, stamina, and coordination
• improved mental skills such as attention span and memorization
• healthy levels of discipline and competitiveness balanced with improved teamwork skills and sportsmanship
• greater appreciation for not only Irish dance and culture, but all other arts and cultures
• lasting friendships with not only classmates and teachers, but with competitors and members of the Irish dance community as a whole.
Is this the same as Riverdance?
Not exactly. Riverdance and the many other stage productions it inspired feature a conglomeration of Irish, ballet, tap, and even other folk dance forms. It is, in fact, Irish dance presented with a wide variety of other dance forms to appeal to modern mainstream audiences.
Irish dance apart from the stage productions is actually quite different, though the footwork is no less intricate. It is also more social in nature and rooted in centuries-old traditions.

Why do Irish dancers keep their arms down?
The myriads of theories tend to range from fanciful to downright bizarre. One attributes Irish dance’s unique posture to overcrowding at wildly popular house dances during the days when Irish dance was illegal. Dancers in such cramped conditions had to keep their arms down or risk hurting someone.
A more credible explanation attributes it to the dance masters of the eighteenth century, who doubled as teachers of decorum. Even in social ceili dances, which required hand holds, clapping, and such, dancers were required to rely on posture rather than the use of arms for balance. Such strict upper body control was considered essential to the poise becoming of a lady or gentleman.

Where can I go to learn?
A good dance teacher shares common goals with his or her students: to learn and share the joy of learning. Development of individual talents and teamwork are both fostered. But credentials are also important. Non-certified schools may do a good job, but they do not provide the same competitive or professional opportunities certified schools do.
To ensure the preservation of authentic Irish dance and maintain a high standard of quality, numerous Irish dance federations have developed rigorous standards for instructors. Only after passing a number of exams on dancing, teaching, and music are instructors issued their certifications.
- CLRG An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha
is the oldest and largest of these federations, governing teachers and judges all over the world. It is also the only organization hosting the annual Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne (World Championships of Irish Dance).

Thankfully, Irish dance isn't a dance form that requires a lot of flexibility. Otherwise, I'd be out of luck.
I was in a really crowded pub in Dublin once when there was an Irish dancing competition and there is no way they could have lifted their arms up in that pub, so there might be some credibility in that theory.
Well being Irish I see it all the time, loved the hub and love you, you are one gutsy lady and I admire a person who stands up for their beliefs !
Hiyah Valerie, great hub! I myself am not a dancer but my sister is at Newcastle University studying contemporary dance. She loves Irish dancing and would love to take it up, I'm sure - I'll definately get her to read your hub! Irish dancing has always fascinated me - especially River Dance! (which is what everyone says when you mention Irish dancing, I suppose? haha) - it looks like it takes a lot of skill!
Thanks for the info. What can you tell us about the costumes?
The costumes may the the subject of another hub. Heck, people have written books about that subject.
