Twitter is basically a simple social network. You can think of it as a hybrid of email, instant messaging and sms messaging all rolled into one neat and simple package.

The idea behind twitter is that you broadcast to anyone who chooses to follow you, simple messages also known as "tweets". It could be as simple as what you are doing right now or you could ask a question to your followers. Likewise you can choose to follow people and recieve their messages.

Twitter also has:

  • The ability to send direct messages to users instead of broadcasting to everyone,
  • Mobile options to send and recieve tweets via SMS messaging on your cellphone,
  • Search options allowing you to find other Twitter users near your location,
  • An API that allows 3rd party developers to develop some great applications.

Check out the videos below. The first will show you the general idea behind twitter and the second details some examples and tools you for use with Twitter.

This is an ingenious idea!! I had never heard of it until a couple of days ago. Especially if you follow the right people, it could clearly draw a map for success for you to follow!! I loved the video explaining it in "plain english" that is always the best way! Thanks!

Hi Kevin -

Great intro to Twitter! I've been getting involved in that myself recently, and I like it. I use a Twitter client from twhirl.org (free) to stay updated without logging on to the Twitter site. I also like that I can post updates from my mobile phone to Twitter, and then have them show up in my Facebook status. It's all cool stuff, and I'm glad to see you writing about it!

- Deanna.
