An Island of Plastic

In the middle of the pactific ocean (about 800 miles north of Hawaii) there is an area much like an ocean version of a desert. This area has weak winds moving in a circular motion, creating weak circular ocean currents. Because of the circular motion of the currents, it seems that this "ocean desert" has managed to attract the world's garbage. Apparently the span of this garbage from every area of the earth, is twice the size of Texas! Everywhere you look in this area is filled with garbage...mainly plastic.

Plastic does not biodegrate! Therefore every piece of plastic that is currenly sitting in this Pacific "gyre" is likely to be there for a very long time yet, not to mention the amount of garbage that is likely added to it on a daily basis.

Not only is this disgusting but can we imagine the terrible effects it is having on countless ecosystems...And if ecosystems are affected, dont think that people are excluded! What goes around comes around...gulp...

What kind of future are we leaving for our children?

So what does all of this garbage doing? The answer is quite scarey. There is actually six times more garbage than there is plankton, meaning there are many fish and bird that mistake garbage for food...and we all know about the food chain, if fish are eating garbage so are we. Studies have indicated that there have been many side-effects of eating contaminated food like earlier onset of diabetes, miscarriage, obesiety etc. Birds and animals are dying of plastics poisoning...and how are we going to stop it? I know I dont want to leave this mess behind for my children to clean up...

What can we do?

Unfortunately at this point there have been no safe ways discovered to "clean up the mess"...an where would we put it? The best thing to do to help the situation is try to avoid buying plastics, and if it is neccessary, to reuse whenever possible.

THIS IS EVERYONE'S PROBLEM...

The average American supermarket uses 25,000 plastic bags a day--it's a mind boggling problem. Good job! Thumbs UP!

Nice hub. I agree with what you are saying - it is disgusting and needs fixing. But plastic does biodegrade - Feel free to delete this comment after :)
