The Foundations of Oriental and Energy Medicine Part 1

Ayurvedic Medicine is the oldest form of systematic medicine in the world. Chinese Medicine is the oldest form of continuously practiced and documented medicine in the world today. The Chinese were composing medical textbooks, forming medical hypotheses, testing the hypotheses, treating people, and observing and documenting the effects of treatments before Socrates and Plato were born, before the formation of the Roman Republic, before Alexander the Great, and before the birth of Christ. China has given us many modern inventions like printing, gunpowder, and the compass. These inventions have been appreciated in the western world for hundreds of years, but Chinese Medicine has only received serious attention in the West for the last twenty years. We have come to learn that Chinese Medicine is very broad in its approach. It includes diet, exercise, mental states, herbs, teas, and the manipulation of Qi energy in the body using techniques like acupuncture and acupressure.

Today in China, the western style of modern medicine is practiced side-by-side with the ancient form of Chinese Medicine. To many western "scientifically minded" people it is a surprise to learn that the two types of medicine are about equally effective at treating illness. The modern style is more effective for some conditions and the ancient style is more effective for other conditions, but overall they both work as well. In fact, today there are so many scientific articles written in Chinese about the ancient forms of healing that we cannot possibly translate them into English. Discoveries are being made on a daily basis using modern electronic instruments that confirm the theories the Chinese have had for literally thousands of years.

Chinese Medicine has been difficult for westerners to accept because it represents a completely different way of looking at the world. In the west we have the viewpoint that we are the masters of the environment and can conquer it. The oriental viewpoint is that man is naturally at harmony with the environment. In the west we focus on the bio-chemistry and physical structure of the body. Chinese Medicine focuses on the Qi energy structure and the flow of Qi energy in the body.

For the purposes of Natural Energy Balancing, the basic principles of Chinese Medicine can be summarized in the following few paragraphs.

Harmony and Health are Natural

It is the normal state of things for human beings to be harmoniously balanced in themselves and in a harmonious balance with nature. That is how things are designed to work. Natural health and wellbeing arise from this natural state of harmony. This state of harmony is a balance between the Qi energy within each person and the Qi energy in the environment.

When the Natural Harmony is Disturbed There is Dis-ease

What is called disease in western medicine is really a state of dis-ease and disharmony. The body is no longer in harmony with itself or with the environment and, as a consequence, is not-at-ease.

Restoring Health is Accomplished by Restoring Harmonious Balance

If the body is experiencing dis-ease the obvious and natural approach is to restore the ease in the body by recovering the natural state of harmony, balance, and health. At a simple level, if the body is too hot then cool it; if the body is too acidic then make it more alkaline; if the body is too dry then moisten it; if the body is too damp then dry it.

Energy Precedes Matter

Dis-ease appears first in the Qi energy in the body and then in the physical body. Dis-ease cannot be cured unless imbalance of Qi energy in the body is addressed. Even in the case of traumatic injury proper Qi balance will benefit the healing process. Otherwise the treatment will only mask the symptoms. Keep in mind that there are many ways to address imbalance in the Qi energy.

Natural Energy Balancing is based on these four simple principles. It can be summed up by saying:

If you keep the body Qi energy healthy then the whole body will be healthy.

There are five components to well being -- proper energy balance, proper diet, proper exercise, proper weight, and proper relaxation. These five components will increase your wellbeing and overall wellness.

I very much agree that the "energy" body needs aligning before the "physcial" can work optimally.
