Ancient Chinese Herbal Medicine is Still Relevant

Using herbs to treat illness and disease most likely originated in China. Thousands of years ago, ancient Chinese herbal medicine was developed, and it's been in use every since. Even though we now enjoy the benefits of modern medicine to cure serious health conditions, the time tested traditional healing methods are still highly relevant. This natural and holistic approach to treating the underlying causes of the symptoms is becoming increasingly popular in western society. Even though it is still considered to be an alternative or complementary form of medicine, more and more people are becoming aware of how they can benefit from traditional Chinese medicine.

Practitioners of this healing form believe that the human body is like a tiny universe. All its various components are interconnected and need to work in harmony with each other. As well, it is believed that the body is divided into two parts called yin and yang (male and female), five elements, and pathways though which qi (energy) flows. To this way of thinking, illness is the result of any of the body's divisions failing to perform in the intended way.

It is believed that by following the precepts of ancient Chinese herbal medicine, many of the ailments that people suffer from can be cured. This is typically achieved through the use of certain herbs which have healing properties that promote the proper functioning of each component of the body.

The practitioners of this form of medicine will use various means of getting to the root of the problem. They will read your pulse and employ the senses of hearing, smell and touch to examine your meridian points. This will help them to discover where the flow of qi is being blocked. This is turn establishes what it is that is causing your ailment.

Once your condition is diagnosed, the practitioner will recommend appropriate treatments. These typically include changes to the diet, ingestion of certain herbal preparations, and sometimes the use of acupuncture.

Fortunately, the Chinese have kept excellent records of the techniques involved in this ancient practice. This makes it easy for anyone today to study the subject dating back to the time of its inception thousands of years ago. For easier reading, however, the writings have been reproduced in modern language that can be studied by medical professional and lay person alike.

Before you decide to try ancient Chinese herbal medicine, it's important that you first visit your regular physician. If you have a serious health condition, it would be foolish to ignore the treatment that modern medicine can provide.
