And Yet It Moves - PC Game Review
54 A combination of the ancient Atari game Pitfall and modern maze games, And Yet It Moves is a 2-D downloadable puzzle-platform computer game.
The player has the power to not only move the character, but also to maneuver the world in order to achieve the ultimate goal of completion. The ceiling can become the floor and the floor can become walls. The goal is to make it through the maze without falling or being crushed by moving boulders. A ghost, or shadow, of a man serves as both a checkpoint and a guide, pointing you in the right direction when you make it to the specific points.
The character looks like a man drawn on paper, cut out and pasted onto the screen. The world of the game looks like a collage of paper. While the graphics are scintillating and interesting, they do make game play challenging. It is a bit confusing sometimes because the safe ground is often hard to see. The colors of the paper on the first demo level are muted shades of brown. The ground, the walls and the holes are all brown. It takes some time to figure out what is safe and what isn't.
The sound effects are minimal. There is a little bit of light background music, but it's nothing dramatic and distracting. The sound effects are overall pleasing. The music doesn't stress you out, unlike many other puzzle platform games where the music puts you in a hurried and stressed mood.
The game is a slightly addicting, but it is easy to give up on. To combat boredom, the game allows friendly competition. When you first start the game, the interface asks if you would like to record your time, your time and ghost, or not record anything. If you record your ghost and time, other players can play alongside your ghost as an added challenge, just as you can play alongside other ghosts, racing to beat their time. With ghosts, you can choose to compete against other players, or see how other players have done things. Using ghosts of other players is also a great way to learn new tricks and shortcuts.
As far as creativity goes, the concept is not a new one, but it was executed with an originality that separates And Yet It Moves from similarly styled games. Puzzle-loving gamers should give it a try. However, some people may not enjoy the game's unusual, artsy graphics. Hard-core, 3-D graphics-loving gamers beware: you may not like it.
Overall, And Yet It Moves ranks in at 3 out of 5. Unusual graphics, interesting concept and a different approach made the game enjoyable, but not necessarily worth purchasing.
