And the Emmys Went To. . .
62
DRAMA SERIES: (Mad Men) - The thing is, it actually is good, though an upset by another worthy show, Breaking Bad, would have been refreshing.
LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad) - I really feel for Hugh. I think he may never win at this point. And if the deserving Cranston manages to keep his show on the air for a while, I really can't argue with the results.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Glenn Close, Damages) - She had no competition last year. Even with six nominees, she had even less this year.
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Michael Emerson, Lost) - Finally! He's deserved this from day one. Or, since he first became a series regular on the show.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Cherry Jones, 24) - I don't think anyone saw this coming. But it shouldn't have been too big of a surprise, I guess. This never felt like it had a front-runner. Just like Hugh, I wonder if Sandra Oh or Chandra Wilson will ever be anything more than bridesmaids.
GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Michael J. Fox, Rescue Me) - Honestly, I haven't gotten back into Rescue Me since it's mediocre third season. But talk about Fox's performance and the current season as a whole may reinvigorate my interest.
GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: (Ellen Burstyn, Law & Order: SVU) - I should have known, and I was this close to going with her in my predictions. She's practically the Meryl Streep of the Emmys.
DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES: (ER, "And in the End. . .") - I'm surprised. I didn't think much of the finale, and I was surprised it was even nominated. Series send-off win, I guess.
WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES: (Mad Men, "Meditations in Emergency") - The most popular drama with its most praised episode. Not a big surprise. Nice speech from Weiner for aspiring writers.
COMEDY SERIES: (30 Rock) - Easiest. Call. Ever. Loved Bob Newhart as the presenter.
LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock) - The clip alone had my mom on the floor. He deserves it, but poor, poor Steve Carell.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Toni Collette, The United States of Tara) - I haven't seen her show, but based off the previews alone, I don't doubt she deserved to win.
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men) - Probably the biggest upset of the night. He's funnier than Rainn Wilson? And Neil Patrick Harris (who was a good host)?
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Kristin Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies) - One of the two surprise wins I was most excited about. She was always the standout in a show that was apparently too good for most people.
GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live) - He was good, but I think Steve Martin was robbed.
GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: (Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live) - She was just too perfect in her skit not to win.
DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES: (The Office, "Stress Relief") - Everyone called it. I haven't seen the episode (or the fifth season, for that matter). Regardless, nice to see The Office win something.
WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES: (30 Rock, "Reunion") - Funny episode. Deserving of the win.
MADE FOR TELEVISION MOVIE: (Grey Gardens) - Pretty much had this won as soon as it was nominated.
MINISERIES: (Little Dorrit) - What can I say? The Emmys love them some British melodrama. And that is one area where we differ. Severely.
LEAD ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Brendan Gleeson, Into the Storm) - The second surprise win that I was happiest to see. The Emmys have a thing for Winston Churchill.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Jessica Lange, Grey Gardens) - No arguments from me.
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Ken Howard, Grey Gardens) - This was a blind guess anyway. I enjoyed his speech, though.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Shohreh Aghdashloo, House of Saddam) - She didn't win the Oscar for being in a house of sand and fog. I guess it was just a matter of time before she picked the right house to win under.
DIRECTING FOR A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Little Dorrit) - This should have been Generation Kill's. Easily. I guess English trauma trumps American realism.
WRITING FOR A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE: (Little Dorrit) - I guess this means it's really, really good.
REALITY COMPETITION PROGRAM: (The Amazing Race) - Why even have other nominees at this point? Honestly.
HOST FOR A REALITY PROGRAM: (Jeff Probst, Survivor) - If nothing else, he gives nice, concise, thoughtful speeches. That's fine by me, but I hope other people will eventually win one day.
VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES: (The Daily Show) - Starting to become its category's Amazing Race. Only difference is I understand why. P.S. When will Ricky Gervais host a show? Is he ever unfunny?
VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SPECIAL: (The Kennedy Center Honors) - I had no idea. And I guess it showed.
SPECIAL CLASS PROGRAM: (Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony) - I don't remember the opening ceremonies. Just that weird Russian guy who seemed fascinated with the teenage gymnasts.
