History Of Cherubs

Cherubs have a long history in western culture. We often think of them in association with Christianity but the fact is they predate formalized Christianity and are present in all western religions. When a person reads the bible you will see mentions of angels and cherubim throughout sections of the new and old testament. However, there is proof that dates human and baby like winged creatures all the way back to the Assyrian culture which is one of the oldest cultures in the Western world. In the myths and lore from the Assyrian culture there were these winged like human looking creatures that would come as messengers and guides to people. The Hebrew sacred texts known as the Torah also mention the cherubim or cherubs a few times in the old testament. Thus they really predate formalized Christianity.

The concept of Cherubs as a baby or young boy or girl did not come into the literature or the art in the West until the Renaissance. During this time cherubs were depicted in art work as most typically little boys. This was predominately in the area of Italy where they are known as "Putti"

Throughout the history though Cherubs have always been a sign of good tidings and new from the heaven. It is often depicted that they take care of a persons soul after they die and leave their physical form to ascend to heaven. The cherubs are often lining the path to heaven and playing music on their harps or signing etc. Thus almost everyone in the west associates the cherub as a good and positive symbol.

Cherubs In Tattoo Design

Typically in the history of tattooing cherubs have been used most frequently in memorial or Rest in Piece tattoos that are done in remembrance of a loved one that has passed on. The cherub often represent the soul of the person or just a general wishing of good luck and good tidings in heaven for the person.

Today cherubs are still very popular of course in the memorial tattoo designs. However, women are now getting tattoos more often then in the past and thus has lead women to take many tattoo designs and rework them in a more feminine way. So many cherubs are now being used in conjunction with lower back pieces or even chest pieces but not just as a memorial tattoo. N Now cherubs are used in a variety of different designs and can even be incorporated into a tribal pattern tattoo. It is pretty common to associate these little cute cherubs with angels also and many designs that women are getting today include both angels and cherubs.

If you are contemplating getting an angel and cherub tattoos design then you will want to think abou the design and come up with some general ideas before you go to your local tattoo shop. Often you can come up with some rough sketches and designs even if they are stick figures and this will help lead your tattoo artist to create a tattoo like you want.
